Generic name: Salicylic Acid.
Brand names: Acnevir.
Available as an ointment, cream and gel.
How to use it?
Ointment: Apply a thin layer and cover it with bandages, foil or tape.
Cream or gel: put the part of skin you want to treat 5 minutes into warm water. Dry your skin and than rub in the gel or cream. Afterwards cover it with foil or bandages.
After applying salicylic acid you should always wash your hands and make sure this medicine does not come into contact with your eyes, nose, mouth or any wounds you might have.
Duration of treatment?
The duration of the treatment depends on the indication for use. Usually it is a few weeks.
When to use it?
Ointment and cream are used for skin-related problems like: severe itching and other skin related problems.
What is the correct dosage?
Always use the dosage and frequency prescribed by your own doctor.
What are the side-effects?
Common (1-10%): Itching
Uncommon (0,1 – 1%): hypersensitive reaction, headache, dizziness, confusion and nausea.
Safety:
It is safe to use with alcohol (in moderation), eat any type of food and drive your car while using this drug. However, salicylic acid can have interactions with other drugs. Therefore always ask your prescribing physician if Salicylic Acid is safe for you.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Salicylic can be dangerous when pregnant or breast feeding. So if you are pregnant or breastfeeding discuss this very clearly with your prescribing doctor.
