What can I do as a single mother? I never speak out of turn about their father even though he doesn't step up. My boys are only 12 but I want to make sure that they grow up emotionally and mentally healthy. I know they still have hope for their dad but they have learned not to expect anything from him.

I think any normal loving mother, who just lost a child, would naturally want want to be very protective of the surviving child because she would not want to lose that one either. So, what she was doing was out of love, since she was trying to safeguard the other child from any harm. It'a a pity that he had to take it the wrong way though because it's obvious that she meant well.
