Food Theory: The Hidden DANGERS of Peanut Butter!

Peanut Butter is now a liquid. Yes, you read that correctly, Loyal Theorist. That smooth, gooey, creamy peanut-y goodness is now classified as a liquid by the TSA. And that means you can NO longer fly with it on an airplane (unless it’s under 3oz, of course). But why? Why would the TSA do this? And will you never be able to eat peanuts, peanut butter cookies, or a Butterfinger on an airplane again? Let’s find out!

YOU CAN BRING FIREARMS IN CHECKED BAGS?!

I used to consult for a company that sold X-ray scanners to TSA. The software sometimes flagged peanut butter as plastic explosives, to the point where their engineers would joke that the quickest way to an interrogation room was to pack a jar of peanut butter with a wire sticking out.

The reason TSA had to define creams pastes and gels separately, is because the average traveling public don't understand viscosity with fluids. I work in an airport and I know of three separate incidents where a passenger thought that their wine wasn't liquid because it's "a dry wine" and a passenger that thought their camera wasn't an electronic because they didn't buy it in the electronics section. I even know of at least one incident where someone thought water wasn't a liquid.

Let me eat my peanut butter sandwiches in peace Matthew Patthew.

The TSA could have avoided this headache by classifying peanut butter as a gel, paste, or cream. That way, they could still get the restriction on it, and be accurate while doing so.

I once made peanut butter while on an airplane by using the bag of peanuts that they gave out as a stress ball. On a long enough flight I could probably bring a pound of whole peanuts and end up with a full jar of peanut butter. 🤔

Matpat is the only person who could make a claim like "peanut butter is a dangerous weapon"

So I want someone to make a theory on what circumstances dictate that Mat uses his intro and what doesnt. I can't tell if there's a pattern

From personal experience, the TSA will also confiscate Hershey's chocolate dip, Nutella, and cream pies on the basis that it's a liquid. Sausages will also get your bag examined because the shape looks suspicious through the x-rays.

Ok this has to be the hardest thumbnail matpat has had in a while

3:16 Well, you can have 100% peanuts and still get peanut butter. You just need to grind the legumes enough to get a paste.

I bet we can’t bring our crunchy peanut butter because they are afraid that we will hide a smaller jar of *creamy* peanut butter inside it.

I had my Nutella taken away from me for the same reason. It was a really sad day seeing them throw the brand new jar away. I was in college and didn’t have time to argue and beg.

As someone who works for the TSA, this is the tip of the iceberg for what we do and don't allow.

Just a note from a materials science and engineering major (MSE) about the claim at 4:45 that the particles within a solid are unable to slide past each other: the particles (atoms), or in some cases molecules, that make up a solid are able to move past each other under certain conditions. This can more or less be exemplified in the phenomenon of mechanical deformation (elastic and plastic); there are other MSE principles that allow atoms or molecules within a solid to move past each other, such as diffusion in alloys and viscoelasticity in polymers, but mechanical deformation is probably the easiest to describe. I would encourage you to look up mechanical deformation in solids and stress-strain curves if you're interested in learning more.

Fun fact, I actually went to school with Mr. Neve. We’re good friends from college! I’ll make sure you mentioned him in the video, MatPat. I know he’ll appreciate it. 👍🏻And thanks for setting the record straight for us. I actually just got back from a trip to NY. Thankfully none of us had PB in our bags. 😅

food theory has such outrageous thumbnails but such well researched and thoughtful content

3:35 MatPat: enough hypothetical questions. Also MatPat: *asks a hypothetical question*

I know food theory goes pretty deep into stuff, but I don’t think any of us would have expected MatPat to go on a tangent about the dangers of crushed peanuts😅

I always find MatPat videos amusing, but this is one of those that made me laugh out loud. Well done, Mr Technical. Well done.
