Her Mom played this role on stage. It makes me wonder if Anne said….Wait til I get my chance. She nailed it! She lost so much weight to transform into sick Fantine, so they had to get a doctor to be on site.

This scene was borderline perfection from start to end. Probably the highlight of the entire movie (which has tons of great moments). Anne deserved her Oscar and more for this performance.

The part that makes me cry during this song is when she sings “he took my childhood in his stride” with such anger and emotion. That line always gets me. Because it happened to me. We meet someone… we are happy. Then something happens and we grow up. We are not the same and we’ve been tossed to the side and forgotten. Even after so many monumental things have happened. So many firsts. We are forgotten. Left with wishing we could go back and hold onto our innocence or happiness tighter. Protect it.

I see a slight expression of hope in her eyes when she sings “still I dream you’d come to me and we will live our years together” and then suddenly an intense sorrow as she transitions into the next line “but there are dreams that cannot be”

This song is so fantastically done by Anne. Everyone usually sings this beautiful, polished rendition of this song but the words are heartbreaking and disempowering. She’s singing about despair and loss. Realizing the cruelty of the world and her position in it. I think she embodied the song so well.

This seen is even more powerful when you’ve read the book and you realise that she was taken as a young girl barely an adult and lied to by a man she truly loved and then abandoned with a child then lost her hair her teeth and her dignity to provide for her and died of sorrow in the hospital never seeing her daughter again and being buried in an unmarked grave as if her life meant nothing
