Do we take an infinitesimally small value of delta X in derivative because we can assume that the value of the function could have been constant for that small delta x? For example we can assume that A body moving with a certain speed could have retained that speed for an infinitesimal small instant And hence calculate speed by taking that infinitesimally small interval?

Since there was a part where the graph was concave downwards so I assume that the water was flowing backwards for a brief period of time
