I think the matte primer sells a more subtle and realistic metal than stacking gloss on gloss if that's what you're going for. If max shine is something your want then the gloss makes sense.

if you use ardcoat finish over it can you still see the difference ?

When using lacquer metallics, a gloss undercoat can emphasise shine & smoothness even more. But for acrylic metallics either is probably fine

would really only work with very thin coats of paint, so anything less than using an air brush wouldnt make a difference

See, for me, it’s different. I prefer my Marvel legends figures to be matte finished. So I spray it once. Just once, and it comes out good. So I have to go with both. Depending on how it’s supposed to be if that makes any sense. It’s a adult collectors line so I prefer for it to look realistic and not a cheap imitation.
