Whenever I call a grocery store to speak with a manager, whoever answers the phone, I always ask for the manager even if it was a manager answering the phone.

But, to avoid any misunderstandings, what’s the best way to have avoided this situation ?
Should he have asked, “Am I speaking to a detective?” Does that give some positive affirmation ?

Same as someone calling a barber shop and wanting to speak to the owner, only to find out they are speaking to the owner… some people would instantly take what he said as insult and some women would immediately need to fire back with some shitty remark for “empowerment”… (when the guy never disrespected you in the first place.)
