As a sterling girl, I find there’s a time and place for both costume jewellery and real jewellery. I prefer plain everyday pieces (like my plain band rings, and rings with small stones that could suit most outfits and my plain sterling chain necklace) to be sterling because they make anything you wear look more put together.

But huge stones and intricate details are out of reach for most of the population so most of my statement jewellery is costume jewellery.

You can enjoy jewellery without going bankrupt for it.

Goldsmith here, the instructions on that testing solutions are as follows 90-100% silver turns a creamy color; 77-90% silver shows a gray color; 65-76% silver shows a light green. Meaning I'm confused what the heck of metal you used that the solution is NOT reacting with your silver. It should react since it is a solutions to test for silver. MEANING it should be able to show you what it is.

I always opt for stainless steel. It is cheap, doesn't make my skin green and i personally cannot tell the difference in colour. Luckily aliexpress has a ton of stainless steel jewellery

just so y’all know target is now carrying real sterling silver jewelry.. i bought a pair of earrings marketed as sterling silver over 6 months ago and they still look like new. they haven’t tarnished or anything, i wear them 24/7, even in the shower. i just clean them every couple weeks with mild soap and water and leave them to dry

A pure silver ring isn't 100% silver ring or else it won't stay in its shape. So, that liquid will affect that claimed to be pure silver ring a bit too.

For people getting cheap rings;
Two things that really help, a clear nail polish around the band or clear spray paint sealant coat.

Edit: you do not have to follow this advice.
This really triggered someone and they’re screaming in all capitals that it’s a bad idea, so do or do not paint your rings with clear nail polish. I **genuinely** do not care, I do it when I first get a cheap ring, my family members did it in the 60s, 80s and 90s.
I don’t buy them often I don’t wear them often.

Having a metal allergy taught me to read closely. A lot of jewelry that claims to be real silver, but then they’ll state in the fine print that it’s silver _plated_ . They can get away with saying real silver simply because they have a very thin layer of real silver on the outside, which eventually wares off and those of us with allergies will then get a bad reaction from it. 🙈

You are supposed to scratch the metal before using any solutions like this one. And you can clearly see the second ring was also starting to react with the solution. If it had been left in there longer, both rings would have looked pretty similar. So I’m assuming your rings are silver plate at best. Which is very different from a full silver ring.

I was being silver jewelry from the same Etsy store for a couple of years. I loved it, had no complaints. A few days back I came across a store on Ali that sells that same jewelry.... Bamboozled. Truth is Ali makes different versions of the same jewelry for every budget. You can buy real silver and real gemstones, but they are going to be more expensive $25-50 range. My guess is both rings are from Ali. Usually the ring that she claims to be of better quality go for around $30. That's still a 25 dollar profit that she's making.

I had a necklace I loved bc it reminded me of my mom. I wore it often, and didn't take it off while doing yard work. I think the light perspiration sped up the process.
One day, when the cheap coating wore off the back just enough, it started to burn my skin. It literally started burning a wound into my skin, and I couldn't wear it anymore at all. It took days to heal and not hurt.
Yes, I considered coating the back. But it just kind of made me feel differently about not caring what metal I wore.
Also, my ears never reacted to silver earrings, but some of those cheap ones are fine, and some inflame and irritate my ears quickly.
