Why is a person unable to hold their urine?
Description:
Loss of bladder control is quite an embarrassing problem, yet it is actually quite common about both adult men and women. The rate could range from the occasional leakage of urine when someone coughs or sneezes to an uncontrollable urge to urinate without getting to a toilet.
Mostly, the problem, termed as urinary incontinence, shows up with age. It is also more common among women than in men.
Causes:
Loss of bladder control is not a disease itself, but a symptom. The underlying issue could be your lifestyle, a medical condition or a physical problem. The cause and the type of urinary incontinence are closely linked. The cause could be
Urinary infection
Vaginal Infection
Constipation
Due to medication
Overactive bladder muscles
Weakening of pelvic floor muscles
Chronic bladder inflammation
Stress urinary incontinence
Some of these are easily treatable and only cause temporary urine leakage issues. Others might be severe and cause persistent problems.
Factors:
Factors that increase the risk of getting urinary incontinence include:
Gender - Women stand a higher chance of getting urinary incontinence than men. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause etc are accountable for this difference. Men with prostate gland problems face urinary incontinence problems as well.
Age - With age, the muscles in the bladder and urethra get weakened. This increases the chances of involuntary urine loss.
Weight - Weight can increase the pressure on the bladder and surrounding muscles, leading to urine leakage with movement.
Smoking - Tobacco increases the chances of urinary incontinence.
Conclusion:
The associated risks of involuntary urine loss are skin problems, infections and even prolapse of pelvic muscles. It is important to get in touch with a doctor and get proper treatment.
