The Promising Indie 3D Platformer You'll Never Play

Indie games get canceled all the time. Such is the case of Captain’s Tail, a fantastic 3D Platformer I featured in my video on the top 10 upcoming 3D platformers last year. This once-promising indie game went from one of my most anticipated games to becoming my next investigation. What happened to this game, and why did its developers leave it?

Real shame. There are a ton of 2d platformers but not a lot of 3D

This is a sad tale. Captain's Tail looks so good! Although I wish they kept the sword (just have him keep it in his mouth; it would add a nice amount of danger & damage to the spin move). You make a great point about it serving its purpose though, and you can't argue with their success now.

Y'know what 3D Platformer I wanna know what happened to? The super cool-looking Oliver & Spike: Dimension Jumpers (or, uh, Olivia & Spike, judging by the last update _I_ could find). Initially I think it was targeting Ouya, and then Amazon Fire TV back when they were promoting that as a nice little streaming box that could play some games... and then that's it. It made some great showings at Gamescoms or GDCs and just never materialized. Seems like so much work went into it by the looks of those demos that they would've just moved it to viable platforms and kept plugging away at it, but apparently not. And that is tragic :(

Damn, I literally just watched the top 10 video, added it to my steam wishlist and then saw this video! Unfortunate it got cancelled, but I'm glad everything worked out for the team.

Pumpkin Jack, I want it. Been following for a while. Also, what a shame for the corgi-game and the indie scene is kind of too big for its own good. One of the main problems in the indie scene is money and the associated marketing. There is a reason Call of Duty, Assasins Creed, Uncharted are established brands and it's not only because they are well-made games. A lot of money goes into branding and marketing. It is pure luck that some games get discovered by big YouTubers. I remember a case where Total Biscuit, Melitele bless his soul, basically saved the devs from Renowned Explorers.

Oversaturated, sure. But with 2D platformers, not 3D. Even Yooka-Laylee's converted to that.

It's a shame we'll never get to play this game, but maybe it's not the worst thing in the world. It got the people who worked on it employed, and that's more important than having a new game to play. Still, it's a shame we'll never know what could have been.

I'd say no to greatest even for indie titles.
Sadly it has the same problem as A Hat In Time for me... And Realm Royale and any 3D platformer. It's the brightness.
Made an amazing animation and model.
Also i'm tired of the bright colorful always bright look with chibi characters.
I want Psychonauts and Rayman 3. Colorful but contrasted by darker theme and shading to make it stand out more and be stylized.
This look like they used basic lighting effect and nothing else. No shading effects or anything.
Yes it's really bothersome to learn to code but you can fix it in Blender and soon in Unity with the Light Render Pipeline or use Unreal 4.


The best potential i've seen yet is solely from the music: Rayman: Revenge Of The Dark.
It's one guy and he's mainly and professionally a musician but GOD DAMN he seriously makes all games of''since 2010 have a run for their money. It's gorgeous.
