Why is the strong force better known as the “color force”? What’s the best way to think about protons and quarks? What do the Three Musketeers have to do with anything? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

Keep those questions about space, science, astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology coming to #AskASpaceman for COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF TIME AND SPACE! Music by Jason Grady and Nick Bain.

I love the way you explain. Never change it.

I saw quark on deep space 9. Several times.

The best thing about Paul is his clothes. Really cool shirts and sweaters. This man exudes class

Two protons won't want to stick together unless there's some neutrons in the mix, otherwise there's too much like electrical charge that's strong enough to repel despite that residual strong nuclear force. But throw some neutrons in there and now you have enough strong force and no additional electromagnetic repulsion, so it works.

WHY DOESN'T MORE PEOPLE SUBSCRIBE! He's so good at explaining, that I think my little brother that is 12 would get it. Thank you so much!

'Quarks all over the place.'
Thanks for explaining complex concepts so clearly that even the humble layman can grok some of this stuff. Really appreciated.

There was a nice question on your last video with a whole host of follow-on questions. This answers a couple of them. Please follow this up with more videos answering the rest of them. Thanks.

Thanks for the picture of the forces leaking out, that opened a door in my head!

Love your videos Dr Paul : ) its a treat to hear a real scientist talk about these subjects.

So then the energy released during fusion, is that from the left over energy or is it even deeper and on a quark level?

what does a proton have the size it does that allows the strong force to just leak out a bit?

Have the book,  a good read. The personality of Paul M. Sutter and his excitement to share his knowledge comes through in his written work also.

You explained it so beautifully and succinctly. Indeed you are a GREAT teacher, much like Walter Lewin!

So I suppose I can say, it being Valentines Day, that this strong nuclear force is "love at first quark?" Ok this is a bad joke. But your video was great.

So a gluon’d be the carrier boson like the photon is for the EMF?

You get a quark! YOU get a quark!

if you placed two low power lasers parallel to one another extremely close in the vacuum of space, would the Casimir effect cause the two beams to attract each other and lower the overall energy of the vacuum in the affected area or would the strong nuclear force prevent this from happening? Also, in doing so would you lower the vacuum energy density enough to allow you to travel faster than the normal speed of light as well as be able to use as propulsion from the attractive force resulting from vacuum energy trying to reach equilibrium like the attraction of a high and low-pressure system or simple heat transfer.

Does antimatter colliding with matter release the strong nuclear force? How can we harness the strong nuclear force?

Wouldn't the Strong Force simply be Strong Mass multiplied by Strong Acceleration?
