In this video, I show you how to create a simple and safe setup for fishing in silt. The depth of silt I am going to fish into is about 10cm. So I want my leader material to position the swivel 8 to 10cms above the bottom of the lead. If you don’t have access to a boat, it’s not always easy to know just how deep the silt is in the area you’re fishing in. My rule of thumb is that if I cast a lead and feel the drop, if I can feel the lead touch the lake bottom, then I’m pretty confident that the silt is no more than 10cm deep. If I struggle to feel the donk, I think the silt is going to be much deeper. If that’s the case, you need to position the swivel further up the leader with a piece of shrink tube. At the other end, I show you how to tie a very simple pop up rig with mono and a split shot.

Matthew u are probably one of the best technical minded carpers out there, just that with the split shot position, is Wicked, normally i would have just put the shot on any old way, but will definitely be doing it your way, thanks keep up the videos, really do learn alot when watching ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars

What a great tip with the direction of the shot and how it helps to turn the hook something that’s impossible to achieve with putty absolutely love it

Brilliant video, I took so much from it, ,
As always nothing complecated, silt sorted with standard tackle box materials, , the split shot off centre mechanics is so obvious, , once it's been explained 😂😂
Last weeks slack or tight lines was really intressting and informative aswell. Again I took a lot from that.
In my humble /rookie carper opinion your videos
are without comparisons
Thank you for making and sharing your knowledge

Love the tip about the split shot! Great simple little rig, I've already tied up quite a few mono hair and mono D rigs. Time to tie some of these. Thanks

Hi Matt.
I am just getting back into carp fishing after a break of around 2 years. There are a handful of YouTube channels I’ve been really enjoying. Not the really big named sponsored anglers and I have to say, your videos are some of my absolute favourites. Even though I’ve been fishing for over 45 years on and off, I have learned something new from your hints and tips on every video. Taking things back to a more simplistic approach has been a real eye opener for me. Reminding me of how it all started in my early days as a kid. Always look forward to when you post a new video. As someone said on your previous video, “the most underrated person on YouTube”. Keep up the fantastic work as we all really appreciate what you’ve done for us anglers. Tight lines 🎣

Excellent point about the splitshot…
I’ve never had/used hook beads; will experiment with a couple of wraps behind the hair to see if it will give the same effect.
Thanks for the great vid!

Your purposeful, careful assembly of your rig reminds me of rigging for halibut in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. You don’t want to make a mistake prior to dropping a 2 pound cannonball, hooks, and bait as much as 600 feet just to get the bait in front of the fish! PB, BTW, was 134 pounds in just 100 feet of water. Well done, sir!

I always use the blood knot, didn't even know there was a tucked blood knot? So I'm gonna try using it, not that it will up my catch rate anyway but I'll give it a go, cheers Matthew 🇬🇧✊🏼

Hi Matt, another outstanding video and incorporating your mono rig with hook bead too, I loved that video also. I have watched your videos for years and never failed to learn something new without the frills/hype of sponsored products. Good solid down to earth technical stuff that details perhaps but as you said, they matter. Cheers and keep it up.

I've recently been using your mono rig and it hasn't failed me yet so now with the pop up version I cant wait to try it 😁. I've never been confident in pop up rigs but I'm definitely going to try this 😊. Kind regards Rigs 🤘

On the bottom part of the leader you slide the beats onto the spliced part, if I have to put them higher up onto the leader I simply pul with my slicing needle a peace of leader material into the leader at the hight I wanna put my beats. It looks neat and works like a charm. 🤗🎣🎣
