I like this idea a lot actually. It could pose a moral dilemma that can add lots of depth to your characters. Why DO they need to die? What did they do wrong? Was that really so bad? Are they working for the bad guy because they want to or because they have to?

imagine youre at the final boss and want to one shot it. you try to shoot this gun, but you need to complete an entire Ace Attorney case before youre able to.

There’s a D&D podcast called Dungeons and Daddies (name is strange I know) that has a similar item. It was a sword that was philosophical in nature and you had to convince it that you had a just cause for hurting/killing people before you could use it

This reminds me of the “one rule” gun from borderlands. It could do insane damage but stopped when the enemy reached 1hp. And it couldn’t kill. It was a Batman reference
