The founding fathers had a big challenge. How to address power? The way they did it through the Constitution was revolutionary. Creating an extensive republic with a multiplicity of factions and State and Federal governments competing with each other for power. This beautifully ensures that no one faction has complete control.

And I was born in Mississippi in 1953 and can honestly tell you that I know “it” when I hear it.

You all left out the ending. "The Articles of Confederation of the Perpetual Union" ... now try and tell me that wasn't written by a Libertarian... lol

The AoC were not weak and ineffective. I mean look at us now we're in no better a position. Instead of finding a way to remedy the situation they panicked and created a fledgling behemoth that we have today. It is partially our fault but still.

The Articles of Confederation perfectly demonstrates how disastrous a small government would be for the US. Government should be as big as it needs to be to support the population (all of it, not just a favored few) in a nation as large and diverse as the United States. The problem with the 'small government' crowd is they have no means for determining if that mission is being fulfilled; they only think "smaller is better" not apparently realizing that if any government (federal, state, or local) cannot enforce laws, the polity it supports cannot exist.
