The last few #snaresaturday videos featured the Ludwig 5X14 Bronzephonic snare drum. First, you heard the drum through a few different tunings, then it was compared to various drums like the copperphonic, an old rocker bronze, chrome over brass, and even a late 60s supraphonic. Being that the supraphonic is one of the premier Ludwig snares, it just made sense to compare the bronzephonic to a Ludwig Black Beauty - this time, in a blind test. So in this #snaresaturday video, it's time to see if you can hear the difference between the Ludwig Bronzephonic and Ludwig Black Beauty.

Call me crazy - but I preferred the Bronzephonic at all those tunings. Sounds almost pre-EQ'ed.

Got the low tuning right. My mistake was to listen for sustain of the sound instead of the pitch. The Black Beauty has a higher pitch in all tunings. As always, that was a great blind test video.

Drum 2 - Black beauty
Between Bronze phonic and Supraphonic I preferred Bronze phonic but between Bronze and Black beauty I prefer Black Beauty.
I preferred them both to be 5"

Low or high, #2 was always the BB. If you don't like overtones, dampen it but it's still a very versatile snare. If I had to buy one, the bronze would get my money. It's vital to experiment with different heads, they can and do make a huge difference....

I'd take the stock bronze over your "speced" black beauty any day, but is it the 8" depth, ambassador X head or the brass shell that's changing the sound to my least preferred.

The Bronsphonic had less overtones the black beauty was a bit ringy for me I would definetly do some muting
