Awesome list. For beginners I would include:
1. The amazing book of card tricks- Jon Tremaine.
2. The amazing book of magic- Jon Tremaine.
3. The illustrated compendium of magic tricks- Nicholas Einhorn.
4. Magic the complete course- Joshua Jay.

For intermediate:
1. Impossibilia- John Bannon
2. Smoke and mirrors- John Bannon
3. Carneycopia- Minch/Carney

Also The Books of Wonder. But that is in my list. Your list is awesome. I have many of them and definitely agree.

Great list! I don’t have Art of Astonishment or Books of Wonder. It sounds like they’re kinda Expert level stuff?

Others I’d add:
Annemann: Practical Mental Magic
Banachek: Psychological Subtleties
Maven: Prism
Tamariz: The Magic Way
Regal: Approaching and Interpreting Magic (for me the material in these is just that bit stronger than Constant Fooling, but I mean…it’s David Regal. Buy them all!
Giobbi: Card College Light
The Memory Arts (just because I found it to be a better path to learning Mnemonica than…Mnemonica!

There are many good magic book recommendations available from many brilliant magicians. But in my opinion, your book recommendations are excellent. Your "presentation" is to the point, clear and concise. Thank you for the information David. I have many of your recommended books but just need more time to study and practice the ideas. Thank you.

It's always good to see book recommendations. I have a few of these, but not many, but I'm also fairly new to magic. This should give me some more ideas on what other books to consider buying. Thanks!

The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks was one of the first books I bought in the early 1990’s. Still a “go to” for card tricks for me.

I love your book videos. I often find myself going back and re-watching them to help me decide what the next purchase/step will be. Thank you!

Great post David. I picked up a copy of The mentalism encyclopaedia on your last recommendation. Unbelievable value for money, the chapters on the history alone are absolutely fascinating and an insight to how we stand on the shoulders of giants. It truly changed my obsession with falling for the latest polished marketing ploys for new shiny gimmicks and spending more time on research before parting with my cash. 😎

David, that was both a great explanation of your opinions and a collection of books. I am very fortunate in that not only do I have all of the books you mentioned, I even have several of them signed by the authors and/or magicians the books are about (Tamariz, Hollingworth, Ortiz, Wonder, Giobbi, etc.). The very first magic book I ever bought was a mass market Signet edition of Scarne on Card Tricks that I purchased in the mid-1970s. I was then out of magic for most the the succeeding 20 years. I have now been back into it and fairly active since 1995. However, like you, I am not a full-time magician and would consider myself a hobbyist.

I've been stopping by Half Price books and just buying whatever magic books they have. Happy to see one of them made your list. The coin magic book. I'm inspired to actually get into it more.

When I begin 25 years ago, I also bought those books

Gary Ouellet - Close-up illusions
Harry Lorayne - The Magic Book
Michael Kaminskas - Miracle Material: The Close-Up Magic of Michael Kaminskas

Great list, but I'd add two to the recommendations: The Approach and Maximum Entertainment. If you are a hobbyist considering going pro, pick up The Approach. And if you want to improve your magical impact, pick up Maximum Entertainment.
