For new sewist, I’m 65 years old and have been sewing over 55 years. As a reference, I made wedding dresses in the 80s to supplement our income. I have seam ripper’s in every room of my house. I have one in my car and in my desk at work. No matter the experience, mistakes happen. Don’t stop sewing because you make a mistake. There is a learning curve to sewing, so be patient with yourself and persevere.

I'm so glad to hear you talk about the importance of fitting! It's what I'm focusing on in 2025.

I’ve experienced sewing and fitting as 2 separate and distinct skills to acquire. As I’ve sewn for at least 50+ years, fitting and fashion and fitting your own body aren’t the same skill set as making a nice set of trousers or how to match fabric and pattern. And yes, the seam ripper is still always in reach 😂

Great advice on all levels. Like some others in the comments, I, too have been sewing for 50+ years. The one step I need to be more diligent in doing is making a muslin. This would improve my fit 100%. Thank you for the advice and the references.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I’ve been sewing for many years and use these great tips, although I usually make wearable muslins in fabric similar to the one I will use for the final project. In addition to body measurements, I also take flat pattern measurements which help with placement of bust darts, etc. When making fit adjustments, I think it’s best to make one adjustment at a time. Machine basting, trying the garment on, and checking the fit before sewing permanent seams have helped me avoid some mistakes. And keeping a seam ripper on hand certainly helps, too. Thanks for these great tips, Brittany!

Happy New Year. This is excellent, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I can so relate on all you shared especially cutting into your fabric without making a muslin. I’ve learned the hard way few years back, never again.

I still have not managed to get better at fitting. I realized there is ease in the garments but I find it hard to know how much is there or how much to take away. I also get hung up on what fabric I want to use. Thanks for this video with great recommendations for how to improve.

So you are talking about everything that I have said to myself today. I started my new project and did a muslin, which I normally do, but I do not make the adjustments I need to a garment. I feel bad that I waited this long to truly look at fit and pay attention to the details of fit.

I started back sewing in 2018, and I've made muslins ever since. I actually enjoy them because I truly believe in "just sewing" once I cut my good fabric. I made a habit of purchasing inexpensive fabric and label them as Muslin Only. As always, thanks for sharing. Happy New Year🎉
