I have at least 4 cans of each of the following in my cabinets on a peninsula: chickpeas, black beans, dark red kidney beans, cannellini beans, great northern beans, pinto beans, diced tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, coconut milk, diced tomatoes with green chilis, etc. I can put the new ones in on the back side of the cabinet, very helpful.

Plan for times when you have no money. If you only have money for one weeks groceries but have two weeks til payday, here is what you do. Make dinner with 3/4 lb of ground beef at the beginning of the month and save the 1/4 for the end of the pay when you have no money and the shelves are getting bare. Save a few slices of that meatloaf instead of eating it all or just fridging it. Dice and freeze a 1/4 of the onion you're cutting up for later. Like wise peppers....they dice and freeze real easy and at the end of the month they are a god send. My husband went without food sometimes 3 days at a time when he was a child, You need to plan to save now to have for later. I think when the money comes in spend exactly $10 buying food for when money is low. Not to put away for doomsday but for when your car breaks down and grocery money buys the new brakes. I am old and when my kids were 5, 7 and 9--- I had a very low budget for a very long period of time. This works. The full tummy foods of plain old Meat, Veg and Potato are always the cheapest and most nutrition. Potatoes, Carrots, cabbage and onions and frozen vegetables are the staples of any kitchen.

I am going to make more of an effort to cook dried beans in the instant pot and freezing them instead of buying the cans. I am getting better at meal planning and using what we have, however i definitely can improve in that area.

One thing I don't spend money on anymore is spices I rarely use

I use a rolling pin to flatten out the ground beef in the bag after it's sealed.

I am 65 and single with a small place. I have a pantry and over did the buying. Last week I noticed some pantry items were expired. I wasn't eating that food anyway and tossed it. I don't drive and a family member takes me to grocery once a week. I buy fresh veggies, and drinks with a few solid items and try to work my pantry until empty.
After that I hope to restart a smaller version of my pantry.

I bought a CSA (community supported agriculture) farm share and pick up weekly produce at the farmers market every Saturday, includes eggs on alternate weeks.

A long time ago now, we converted our kitchen food storage to clear glass; we did it over the course of a couple of years. I have found the clear glsss to work towards reduced food waste. - As a side notte, we havr a few glass baking dishes with plastic lids. I freely use these as food storage containers then stack stuff on top of them; footprint space is valuable in our fridge.

I freeze a lot of things in the vacuum seal bags. While sealing, I align it so it is as close to the top as possible. When I go to use the food, I cut just below the seal, wash out the bag with dish soap and water, rinse and let dry. I then can reuse that bag. I do this over and over. You would be surprised how many times you can use the same bag.

label with painters tape and a sharpie pen, then wash and reuse ziplock or plastic containers. 💰 money saver ❤

I use the cheapest sandwich baggies that Dollarama sells. Not the unnecessary ziploc type, but the kind that fold over with a flap. I use them to separate stuff into smaller sizes that I then store in a more freezer-proof container.

I often wash, air dry and reuse baggies.

I wouldn't think of buying a machine just to label stuff. Instead, I write down on a piece of paper whatever is in the baggies and put that scrap in a separate baggie in the same container. The thin plastic baggie that the scrap is resting in never contaminates the food. Just identifies it.

We're eating lentils and rice. Before that, we had tuna- noodle casserole. In cold weather, I hate to go shopping, so we use what's on hand. Near Chicago, Tina, Al's wife

Excellent suggestions! I've had great success with reducing my grocery budget from meal planning around my pantry and freezer. Like you, I buy large packages of fresh chicken and freeze it in portions for my single life. Cleaning the frig weekly will be a new step to help reduce waste with leftovers and produce.

I have a seal-a-meal vacuum sealer and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
I've had one for over 20 years.
I got my daughter one about 7 years ago.
I'm 71 years old and live alone.
I buy in bulk and break everything down into packages that I'll use
I don't just buy meat in bulk, I buy many things in bulk.
Now, I even have my daughter buying in bulk and breaking things in packages for her family of 4.

Refridgerator space is valuable for us and, i often shift food into increasingly smaller containers. This makes me more aware of what is in the fridge. I put leftovers in a specific part of the fridge, prepped veggies in another, and so on. When i go to get sk ething, my hand kniws where to zim as i open the fridge door.

When we moved into our first home, we didn’t have a pantry either. My husband made the coat closet (right outside the kitchen) into a large pantry. Our coats hung a small closet with our water heater. I would never have made it without that pantry.

We just stock up when things go on sale that we are running low on. After awhile, you know what your family eats. If you keep different kinds on meat (vacuumed sealed) on sale at a good price, and tomato base for soups, spupnboullion flavoring, chopped and frozen peppers, onions, blanched potatoes, mushrooms, celery,
pasta, & chili, tacos, pasta, canned goods, you are good to go. We don't menu plan. We get most items on sale at a low price. We save more by just buying on sale instead of meal planning. That way it is all on sale. Everyone has to do what works best for them. Merry Christmas everyone! Jesus is the reason for the season. He loves ya.🎁

Not really saving on grocheries but food: over the next few weeks till my wedding I am begining to stock up not only some staples (starting with a 100% empty pantry) but also frozen versions of the meals we eat out most often. Orange chicken and rice costs $4 for both of us vs $20 at Panda. Goal is eventually have a fully stocked pantry we could eat out of for a month (or longer), but the baby step of dramatically reducing our eating out is something I am very much looking forward to.
