I like how you try to understand people’s motives rather than just passing judgment. It’s easy to pass judgment with historical hindsight, but it’s harder to put yourself in their shoes and think how they would think based on their culture and experiences.

This makes me want to think more deeply about other historical decisions I have judged possibly too harshly.

You add awesome originality to these reactions. I totally agree with what's been already said in the comments: your passion isn't "being popular", your passion made you popular. Couldn't have said it better. Thank you for your work!

23:56 If he had listened to Rasputin at the point where it mattered most, he probably would have survived. It's a great paradox with Rasputin bc of all the bad advice and corrupting influence he helped undermine the Monarchy, but it was the war that did them in and Rasputin urged him not to go to war.

In a similar note to what you said both about accusations/labels thrown around today but also at the time with Rasputin and also McCarthyism, I often think of it as "the more you treat someone who is not 100% in agreement with you as an enemy, you really should not be surprised when you end up turning them against you. Whether actually in disagreement or a neutral party, you can only paint someone as your enemy so much before they start to see you as one of their enemies too." It's a cycle that is hard to break, especially without people being able to go past the surface level and learn more about each other as individuals, not just what labels you or they think fit best.

It is also interesting to wonder how much of the idea of people like Rasputin (and other advisors or people close with royalty in history that weren't popular or were controversial) were "controlling" the monarch came from fear of being punished for speaking against the monarchy and how much of it came from a belief that they were better than that. An idea that, there's no way our king/queen would make such bad decisions themselves.

The evolution of this man is amazing... its almost certain that during his travels/pilgrimages in his early years he most have encountered some amazing people whom he learned many of his skills from. The man is obviously intelligent from the start but to have acquired these different abilities he almost definitely ran with some talented grifters/con-men during his early years. Add that with a good amount of luck and this leads to someone who can talk his way in and out of almost any situation...

I've said it before, but I'll say it again anyway. The empathy with which you approach subjects like this is greatly appreciated by me. Trying to understand WHY Nicholas and Alexandra might give Rasputin such access and authority rather than simply just passing judgement on their ultimately foolish actions. Nobody really learns anything useful to their lives or their understanding of history simply through learning facts alone..

8:30 Nicholas would have been a superb constitutional monarchy, but his upbringing with reactionary tutors made that impossible for him to accept.

Yes, lots of accusations can drown the real ones and I have seen tragic consequences of that. But I have only seen that work for charming or otherwise favored people. For marginalized or hated people it has the opposite effect. Both can be seen at work with Rasputin: to those who liked him, the preposerous allegations shielded the serious ones. To his detractors, they made the real accusations against him more credible

19:48 Personally as someone from the UK, having seen all of what you're talking about over the past few years; I think you're right, but America as a country has a lot of issues itself compared to the rest of the western world. So to someone in the US it can seem like all of world society has the same issue, and they do all have them to some degree, but America is one of the only country with those issues on that kind of scale specifically.

I never knew there so many other mystics and cultists around the Russian royal court at the time. I figured that was part of the reason why he stood out.

Very interesting, I'm glad Rasputin was chosen for this series, it is a fascinating story even though we know how it ends. I'm keen to learn more.

Really like this series . Also JD is doing amazing work and I'm loving seeing thier journey the good work he and his Son are doing to help. Im defiantly gonna have to make a donation to help him. 2 ocean's may separate Americans from whats happening in Ukraine and Russia. But kindness and good intentions can reach across any distance even if its a ocean . Keep up the good work Chris 👍

Not on topic, but worth note. One of the bitter ironies of having hemophilia is that by the 1970'sdoctors and scientists were able to isolate the clotting factor hemophiliacs lack and inject it into patients. It appeared many lives would be saved. The problem was that many blood sample were needed to treat one patient. When the AIDS epidemic hit, no one could test blood for it at first. As a result, many hemophiliacs contracted HIV in the early 1980s.
