Lay basically had to beg to the execs to listen to his composition and got rejected many times. Shed tears and swallowed embarrassment but boy didnt give up until he asked one of their managers to listen to the song. Manager listened and promised to help him. Thank God it worked. He then asked Chen to put Korean lyrics and Chanyeol to write his rap part. Still the comp did not want to include the song in the album (coz they did not like the lyrics. Very personal and surreal. It talks about what EXO had gone through when members left. Chen and Chanyeol wrote what's in their heart with the help of the members). It took more convincing power. Because of Lay and members we now have the anthem "Promise"

I think if you reach a certain point in seniority, you are allowed to do what you want at SM. Which is why their senior Idols do have creative control, and are allowed freedom on TV and personal lives. Look at how unrestricted SuJu, SNSD, Shinee, BoA, TVXQ are. But they admit in their early years, they didnt have much freedom. I think in the first few years, the young SM Artists are more strictly controlled. SM seems to obsess over seniority and credibility alot, so it makes sense.
