Sonic Rush is the best example that, if done right, 2D boost is VERY possible. I loved Rush, and would pay good money to have a sequel to the series, or a remaster.

I love the original boost mecanic in the Rush Series, and the OG 3D boost from Unleashed in awesome too! But, lets be honest, a boost in a 2D Sonic Game is more powerful than Super Sonic, not gonna lie.
