Oh I feel for this man. So many of us do things for sentimental reasons only to find out 20yrs later that it probably wasn't ideal. I guess the only thing to do is learn from it & keep going & not regret what could have been.

I bet he would regret it if he did not follow his heart and live away from his friends and homeland. He should be proud of those yesrs he lived there..

That's not a mistake. There was no way for him to even remotely predict such circumstances.

Decisions come back to you. Sometimes you have to be disciplined first, take care of your foundation, and then go for the ambitions of the heart. Especially in this guy's case who is a fellow immigrant and more than likely had nothing when he came to the states but had the opportunity to secure his and his family's future.

This reminds me of possibly the scariest and one of the most profound conversations I had with a co-worker when I used to work at Trader Joe's. We worked the early morning shift and I never spoke in the morning because it was always so cold and so early I had no energy. One day my coworker comes up to me and asked me what I do throughout my day, my hobbies, etc. so I asked him the same. He then tells me his story for about 30 minutes, how he traveled the world and tried to be a musician and chased his heart when he was young. I said that's so cool! He was about the age of the guy in this interview and he says, "It was the worst mistake of my life. I should have been smarter with my decision, now I am old, I have to live with a roommate, I work full-time, drive Uber on the side, and my body aches after my shift." Then he says the line that scared me, he said, "I will most likely have to work until I die." Be smart, be disciplined, there will be opportunity to take of your future and your dreams.

It seems that his mentor did see a problem and he probably did also. That is what he means about following his heart. His head saw the problems down the road but he missed his family and culture. That is totally understandable. No greater example than the Holocaust. There were Jews, like Einstein, that saw the writing on the wall and left their homeland but he and other professionals had the resources. Most common people need a-lot of faith and courage to leave behind everything they know. In his case, no one in his family saw a good reason to migrate either and you can’t blame them at the time.

People in the comments are saying "it's not a mistake, it's not a regret, and there's no way he could have predicted that" but you can't possibly know exactly how he feels, can you? He is clearly self-aware that some things didn't go the way he expected it, he regretted the decision, and that's that. He kept on moving along.

If he stayed in Boston, he would have missed out on 20 years worth of memories with his family/friends back home. I believe he would have seriously regretted that. Regardless of the crisis and the financial impact, he rrally made the right decision.

Thinking a marriage can fix an already broken relationship. Many years later filing in for a divorce. Best decision I made so far!

"Working til I'm 73" like the rest of America! There are worse things than work.

My biggest regret was being too proud to stop the divorce.

WE CAN NEVER MAKE GREAT CHOICES WHEN WE REFUSE TO STAY IN CLOSE PRAYER WITH FATHER GOD. ALWAYS STAY IN PRAYER WITH FATHER GOD AND HE WILL DIRECT YOU AND LEAD YOU. HIS LOVE IS ALWAYS TRUE.

Very interesting, first time I ever heard regrets on following your heart instead of your brain …

If he had followed his head, he would have said he regretted not listening to his heart. Very easy. He did what was right for him at that moment. And if you want, you can find a way. He had his whole life to do that. And children grow up.

That is the result of being an immature mama’s boy. You don’t always have to be by your mommy guys, chill out and live your life. Detach

And United States was any better during 2008. I went to US in the late 1990’s and came back to Canada early 2000’s, the best decision!

So George had a PhD and could teach at BU, but decided to go back to Lebanon which has been a hot mess for a very long time. That does not add up, tbh.

The other way round he would have regretted to not have followed his heart at that time....maybe
Btw - I also will most probably work until the end, even without a crisis in Lebanon:) and I have 2 diplomas and post graduate and whatever, worked all my life.
