It's important to note that the numbers we are using today are Arabic. At the time of John the lingua franca was Greek. Greeks had different numbers than the Romans or Arabs. The number 666 in Greek is "χξϛ", so that is the symbol that John most probably saw in the visions.

I have had family members who literally said "I will accept Christ, later". Later came a lot faster than she expected as she died less than a year later. It still hurts quite a bit, not the death so much as the knowing what happens to those who reject Christ's offer. I can only hope that she accepted Christ at some point before she died.

You will not be able to take the mark by accident. Those who take it will be conscience of the existence of God and will CHOOSE with full realization of what they're doing to oppose God. So if you're afraid you may have accidently taken the mark, you haven't. If you're afraid you may in the future take the mark by accident, you can't.
