10 Pokémon Whose Designs Were Almost VERY Different

The Pokemon you know and love today didn't always look the way they do now. Pokemon designs often change drastically before they end up in the final games, and some Pokemon in particular were almost unrecognizable compared to their finished look. In today's video, we're going to be highlighting these Pokemon by looking at 10 of them whose designs were almost VERY different!

I wonder if the "ninja frog assassin" beta design for Politoed later became the inspiration for Greninja? They might not look very similar, but in concept they sound exactly the same.

That Mew design

Would've actually explained why Mewtwo looks the way it/he does

Somewhere in an alternate timeline we have Bug/Dragon Scyther and its Scizor, Mega Scizor, and Kleavor evolutions, and I want to see them.

Gyarados looks like the Mongolian Death Worm.
Seel is one of my favorites. I love how adorable it is.
doesn't look like "a complete actually looks fairly similar to what it does now. The only difference I can see is that it has a that does NOT look menacing.
The "Plain" Sneasel looked more like a cross between Persian and Mienshao
What in the heck did they do to Porygon2??? What happened between one and two? How do you go from Blocky Duck to Bubble Lion???

Sneasly is actually base on a Japanese Yokai called Kamaitachi. thats why it look like that in the beta design. its pretty cool tbh. as Kamaitachi is a wind element monster who are stealthy as ninja. so yeah i can actually see that design to work tbh.

Beta Sneasel looks amazing plus the second design looks very close to Mienfoo design from Gen 5

The Celebi design one brings me back to the year 2000-2001 when the Kokopelli (I honestly forget how to spell it now) we're very popular as a decorating feature. My mom had random stuff around the house with it, it was in stores at the time. I think that's funny and interesting.

It's important to note that Gen 2 likely had to change a lot due to the game's unexpected success in the west. It could explain the changes to Celebi.
I should also point out that Gen 1's Venusaur likely existed well before Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. There were nearly 3 dozen Pokemon in the earlier stages of development. Just as they eventually added types, they also added evolution. It's often stated that the final stage is usually the first designed before working backwards to their first. This was said to be the case for the starters.
And lastly, Game Freak had registered the name Mew in the early days of development. It was the existence of the name that spurred Mewtwo's creation. Still, in Red and Green's development, the pixel art often came first when it came to art, meaning there likely were no actual designs drawn before being programmed. But it's actually kind of fitting. A Pokemon name from the early stages ended up being the last Pokemon created for the game. A Pokemon believed to be the ancestor of all Pokemon ending up as sort of an alpha and omega for those titles, as well as a promise of more Pokemon to catch.
That's why I'm a Mew fan, BTW.

One of my favorite beta concepts was the original girafarig design, the dude had two fully formed giraffe heads, one good one evil. It looked more like the pushmi-pullyu concept they probably intended, now they turned my boy into dex fodder. Here’s hoppin’ that they give him a new evolution in some future African-region game!

It would be cool if some of these beta designs became regional forms!

The alternate Mew in the thumbnail honestly looks like it could be a pre-evolution of Mega-Mewtwo-Y and I love it 😍😍😍

I've always thought Scyther looked very draconic and wanted a blue dragon type evolution to go with his red scizor one since gen 2. This makes his design make a lot more sense since the original was pretty much a dragon! With the release of Kleavor, the idea came back to me, and developered further (I always thought the name would have to start with an S), but here it is!

Lansor - Bug/Dragon.
Stats - 70/125/75/45/65/120
Ability - Stance Change - using King's Shield will swap Lansor's ATK and DEF stats, and his SPEED and SP.DEF stats. (70/75/125/45/120/65)
Hidden Ability: Technician

Appearance: blue and tan like the Kingdra color palette. It leans into Scythers dragon face and feet features more heavily and has dragonfly wings and abdomen (the iconic tail). Its arms are lances, with a dragon-bone type spike at the tip, but its not just a beedrill clone, the lances also can open and retract like an umbrella to function as a shield. When opened, the shields will have 5 spokes, each with another dragon-bone spike on it, and be positioned like an upside-down star to resemble the silhouette of a dragon head.

I also have an idea for a Bug/Fairy or Bug/Psychic evolution called Sceptor. its more feminine like a mix of Scizor and Feramosa, but pink colored (if fairy, purple if psychic). it has sceptors for hands and is a special attacker.

I feel like Generation 9 will be a reality, this year... they use to do a 3 to 4 year after the next gen, generation 8 was in 2019. In Legends Arceus There are many new pokemon with new variants from gen 5 in gen 4.

4 + 5 = 9 generation confirms.

Scyther’s original design looks a lot like a parting mantis with its arm position. I feel like if they could have slightly tweaked the design, or kept it the same even, I personally think it would make a great baby Pokémon, because in my mind, scyther, jinx, electabuzz, and magmar, seem to go along with eacother. I can’t explain it though
