Brought tears to my eyes... It is so sad that we tend to forget how dearly we paid for democracy - and that we still have to sacrifice to preserve it. Nothing good comes without work and effort.

From Portugal to Estonia, from Greece to Finland. From Poland to Ireland. If we remain together, Europe can be stronger than ever. 🇪🇦🇪🇺🇪🇺

Just so you know, the Romanian madame is referring to the 1989 Romanian Revolution, which started in Timișoara.

People of all ages were shot in their fight to end communism.✌🙌🗣🗣

My grandma fled for Hitler, being too “dark” with a Czech dad and an Hungarian mom. My mom was born 1942. It determined my life. All of it. We cannot stop fighting for peace and stability. Thanks for this kind reminder.

I cried during this video.
50 years ago, my country of Portugal was in the turmoil following the Carnation Revolution. After almost 50 years of fascist dictatorship, a new Democracy was born. I think my generation (born 2000) will never know to appreciate the freedom our grandparents' generation fought for.
Watching from Finland, studying in Estonia, thankful for all the EU has given us. #UseYourVote

Thank you for the video! ❤ It's true, authentic message from our older ones. I'm from Poland and I strongly believe, I know how important is for us to stay united, stay with democracy. I love being in European Union. ❤ Europe is my beloved home and it's great that in our continent we have so many different countries, cultures and we can and should stay united. ❤

I'm born and raised in the USA. My mother was Lithuanian heritage, also born here. My father was a Lithuanian DP who immigrated to the US in 1950. My wife's family were all postwar Lithuanian DP's (Displaced Persons, war refugees). They were the lucky ones. Democracy and the lack thereof has always been a clear memory to my generation. I think our children understand that. I hope our grandchildren understand and value freedom. Unfortunately those memories do fade. We see that in the USA. Stand firm, my European brothers and sisters! We will try to "hold the fort" here.

I don't have the right to vote yet, but this stories emotionated me a lot and I'm grateful that I, live in a free country and hope that all that can vote, would. Eastern Europeans should never forget that in 1989, we, got our freedom.Long Live Democracy, Long Live Voting!!!!

My great-great-grandfather was shot and killed in the First World War.

His son, my great-grandfather, was born in 1914 and never knew his father. In addition to a difficult life without a father, he fought in the Second World War and was a prisoner of war in Russia. He returned home after 10 years in a POW camp during which no one knew anything about him. His journey home was on foot. He drank water from rivers and ate tree bark to survive coming home.

His son, my grandfather, grew up in the post-war period in what became the Eastern Bloc. He was forced to live under communism.

His son, my father, lived his first 23 years under communism, without the right to freedom and not knowing the meaning of the word "democracy." The transition after 1989 was very difficult for him, as Romania changed completely after the fall of communism.

I was born in a period of democracy, with full rights, in a time of transition, but now I consider myself a European citizen. I witnessed the societal changes starting with the EU accession in 2007.

Now, my son was born into a world completely different from previous generations. I hope that the future for him continues on this upward path.

If we look from generation to generation, the differences are not big, but if we look overall, it is incredible how much Romania has improved.
The older generations had to fight in wars or in the streets during the Revolution.

We just need to go and vote.

I'm not even in the right generation and I still cried. It's silly but I can't but hope it's not entirely too late.

I’m from Romania, i know that the EU isn’t perfect, and we all have to work to make it better, to improve it for the benefit of us all. I was at a very young age, when the communism fell in my country, in ‘89-90, but i remember vividly the 90’s, the struggle to save the young democracy that we had, our parents had to struggle everyday in those dire times. Somehow, Romania managed in 2007 to join the EU and our life improved since that day a thousandfold!
We have to protect the EU against our enemy, and do not lie to yourself, our enemy is Russia and it always has been!
Vote for democracy, vote for the EU, this is our family and our house, let’s make it better!
Viva Europa!
