How to Change a GE Side by Side Water Filter

When you are changing your water filter in your fridge the first thing to do it locate where the filter is. Once that is done and you have removed it the next question that comes to mind is how do I purchase the right one?

Steps to replace a water filter:
1. Locate the water filter
2. Remove the water filter
3. Find the part number that is printed on the filter (required to purchase the correct one)
4. Purchase a new filter at your local appliance store or hardware store. Can also find them online. (Yes you can purchase from @BoulevardHome )
5. Replace the water filter the same way you removed it.

Common Questions about filters:
* How often do I need to replace my refrigerator water filter?

- Most of the time refrigerators come with a reminder that is built into the fridge. This reminder historically has been set to remind you to change the filter after about 6 months of use. Your filter may or may not need replacement at that time. To be safe you should probably change it. If you do not use the water or ice on your fridge very often then you can manually reset the filter and wait another 6 months. (Manufactures recommend changing them once every 6 months)

* Can I use a generic brand filter?

- We have tested a number of generic branded filter and found that some do work, but some did not work very well and leaked. We recommend to purchase the suggested model, however if you would like to try a generic brand you will save quite a bit of money. Good Luck!

Can l wash the filter or do l have to get new one ?

I got Glacier Fresh XWF filters for my GSS25 and after installing one the fridge says "Err" when I try to dispense water and no water comes out. If I put the old filter back on it works.
