And the worst is that they confuse stoic with emotionless.

Stoicism teaches men to control their thoughts and emotions, while also teaching them not to chase pleasure endlessly and improve themselves. Seems like the opposite of toxic, but I’m no psychology professor.

Courage is not the absence of being afraid.

Courage is being afraid and doing what has to be done anyway.

My childhood:
1. Think twice before you open your mouth.
2. Your head has 5 holes in it, use your mouth 1/5 of the time, use your eyes and ears all the time.
3. If you have nothing positive to say, say nothing unless it is righteous to do so.
4. Defend those who can't defend themselves.
5. Never start conflict, walk away or end it if your path is blocked by the threat of harm.
6. Love others the way you wish to be loved; It is a verb, not a noun.
7. Integrity is acting out in the world what you believe to be true.
8. Respect your elders if they deserve it.
9. Guide your younger siblings right.
10. Honour your parents. Disobey with polite questioning.

Pretty simple really.l

Loved that you showed a clip from Brooklyn Nine Nine. Even though Peralta and Boyles were emotional, they still had Cpt Holt to lean on.

Stoicism encourages the mental discipline of detachment, which is necessary when one faces a stressful or chaotic situation and needs to rationally think their way through the problem.

Former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink often talks about it in his videos & seminars about leadership. In a wartime combat environment, you need courage and the discipline of Stoicism and detaching yourself from your emotions so you can think clearly, make the right decisions and do what needs to be done.

The last thing you want, never want actually is someone who completely freaks out and goes into a hysterical, sobbing meltdown. That's not going to help anyone.

The part about the writers is so true. A culture should not take its cues on virtue from artist. But it should rather uphold art that reflects its values

Yes.
You're a threat to *them* if they can't manippulate your emotions, words and actions.

Indeed, I was fortunate enough to have known my grandparents and they didn’t need to say to much to make you realise you were getting it easier than them on every level.

Emotion is a tool and as a tool it does not need to be used all of the time.. Everyone needs to embrace STOIC attitude, less B.S and drama....

If stoicism is toxic, you're doing it wrong.

As someone who has been stoic through my entire life, I can distinctly remember 3 times in my life when I have let my emotions get the better of me, all when I was a teenager and EVERY single time it has been detrimental to me as a person and the situation with which I was involved. Ever since then, I have developed a mental exercise while under stress to check my emotional state: stop and ask yourself “Am I helping or hindering this current situation? If I’m helping, I’m in the right state of mind. If I’m hurting, I need to take a step back, take 3 square breaths and reassess the situation.” The the KEY to stoicism is to recognize the need to mentally remove yourself from a situation and assess it as though you were an outside observer and determine what that outside observer would make of your actions.

Stoic = "toxic" when men do it.. vs. Strong and Brave when sTrOnG fEmAlE cHaRaCtEr does it. Sigh.

Stoic does not mean a logical thinker. Stoic men can still be irrational in their decision making. Balanced people who can respond to situations but can also process and/or express emotions are healthier.

People who constantly say everything is toxic are toxic.

That Fowler backstory man... It were probably just 3-4 sentences but I made the same face as Heiji Shindo did. Great writing.
