The total solar eclipse drew thousands of people together as it plunged parts of North America into momentary darkness on Monday.

The celestial spectacle became visible on the coast of Mexico at 11:07 local time (14:07 EDT; 19:07 BST), as crowds on the beach went wild. In just under two hours, it travelled across 13 US states and into Canada.

The spectacle happens about every 18 months, but they’re often in unpopulated or remote areas whereas this one passed over several big cities across three countries.

I saw that once in Venezuela in 1998, I was a kid but I still remember it. The sensation of awe that these people were having is something that I can relate to

So eerie, mystical, and unbelievable to feel cold darkness in the middle of the day. Beautiful corona with thin whispy clouds flying over. Goosebumps in Buffalo, NY🌑

Amazing to think this is only possible because the Moon is the right distance from Earth, and the right size, and the Sun also is the right distance and size. Incredible.
A reminder how precious everything is and how small we are

I love things like this that unite people. Everyday all we hear from both traditional and social media just creates division, men vs women, right vs left. Its nice to just see something that brings everyone together to enjoy. Well, everyone except flat earthers I guess.

Please BBC, it was an ASTRONOMICAL phenomenon, not an astrological one!

Astrological?? The BBC doesn’t have a clue what it’s talking about. Astrology ≠ astronomy.

It was awesome. To think millions of people at the same time were witnessing such a moment really makes me smile.

I saw it from Montreal on my balcony. I heard the entire city erupt in cheers and awe. It was something unique. Here in Quebec, There isn't a lot of people, about 9 millions. Our news covered it like it was the end of the world and everyone would be blind because we have nothing else to talk about lol.
They closed the school and even re-route bus. Subway stations were packed. A lot of people just took a day off or were allowed to leave earlier. It was a great thing to witness and i feel sorry for anyone who missed it either because they were annoyed by the constant coverage or because they couldn't.

It just made me humble that there's someone out there bigger, mightier than us than can make this thing to happen. Hope all these nations and leaders just stop look at the sky, feel the moment be humbled.

Cleburne TX 44 years old never seen one. Thought it was going to be cloudy so I I was bummed out. Then miraculously at 10 mins prior to totality the clouds cleared. No words can describe how awesome that was.

The diamond ring is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen with the naked eye. No videos or pictures do it justice.

It's not just the moon. It's the togetherness. You can tell by how most people were describing the experience more than the moon itself. It's part of our human nature, it makes us feel alive and connected, it helps us to manifest and achieve our goals by forming bonds and sharing interests. Beautiful.
