iFixit FINALLY Buys New Laptops!

Here at iFixit headquarters, we're proud of the fact that most of our team is still using 2012 Unibody MacBook Pros. These tanks have held up incredibly well over the years, and for the most part, they are still perfect workstations. But for those of us working extensively with Photoshop or compiling code, the 2012 pros are starting to show their age. That means it's time to find a new machine for a good chunk of the iFixit office!

If you're still rocking a 2012 MacBook Pro the best way to keep it going is an SSD upgrade kit!

The Framework laptop. It is amazing in terms of reparability and has a similar 11th gen Intel processor. Don't know about the color accuracy of the display though.

Mad respect to you guys for actually practicing what you preach. Here's to hoping right to repair goes mainstream this decade.

Still happily using my mid-2012 15" MBP. This thing has been such a workhorse, and with any luck will last until 2022, it's 10th year of continuous, daily use. My next laptop will have some big shoes to fill.

Less than 10 years apart, but the reparability is drastically different.

I‘m a real Apple Fanboy but I really wish the Right to Repair will win at last and we get repairable devices again.

It's crazy that in our environmentally conscious society we're getting worse with repairability... So much E-waste!

Was thinking of picking up an XPS myself. Sick of my current heap of junk laptop. The battery has under 500 cycles but lags when the battery is under 20% and randomly shuts off not long after.
Of cause they glued it in to make replacement difficult.

Dells website is so confusing I don't even know which one I should get though ahah.

You didn't mention thinkpads ... well i used a T530 from 2012 till recently, when i upgraded to a t450s. The T530 went into a new home, but the X230 im writting on is still one of my favourite laptops of all time and will probably clunk along for a long time to come.

It sure is a shame they don’t make repairable MacBooks anymore.... I hope the iFixit team enjoys their new Dell XPS laptops though! Those look nice

It's really funny you guys didn't include a lenovo thinkpad in your comparison.

Here's hoping that Framework comes with a great laptop.

My mid 2012 mbp is also going strong with an ssd and ram upgrade. Being my first personal laptop, I probably will still keep it as a browsing computer. Really wish they kept the upgradability with the newer mbp

That era of Mac was fantastic. I still use my 2010 iMac 27in every day. Works flawlessly.

The 13' Mid 2012 MBP is a beast! Still using mine heavily everyday and it still holds up even with external monitors and rendering photo or video. I will really miss it, if it completely breaks one day.

I suggest HP Elitebook 830/835/840/845 g7 and Dell Latitude 5410/5420. All these have lots of I/Os, two RAM slots, replaceable SSD, socketed WIFI card and excellent maintenance manuals.

I’m still using the MacBook Pro 13” mid-2012, and it got me no problem at all. But I can see some clutters and notice heavy app processing.

My first thought was installing a logic board from an M1 mac inside an old macbook’s case and somehow make it work. Some on YouTube upgraded their old iMacs like that.

That’s the laptop I upgraded from! I have since built my own Linux machine, and bought a m1 Mac mini.

It is truly tragic that Apple didn't use some of the space savings in the new M1 devices to make them a bit more repairable.

I still use my late 2011 MBP. It is one of the best laptops of all time!
