Wow! These cities are totally awesome for you to consider as your new home!

New York. If you’re not from here, when you think of the Empire State, I’m sure you think of New York City, the Statue of Liberty, maybe the Yankees and probably pizza. And, while living in New York City is a dream for those who love live entertainment, art, culture, crowded spaces, crime and a high cost of living, there’s more to New York than just the five boroughs. It’s a large state with a rich history and it’s a great place to call home. Sometimes. I mean, people say “I love NY” all the time for a reason, right?

But, as always, some cities are better than others - and today we’re talking about the ten BEST places to live in the Empire State.

To measure the best cities to live in New York, we have to use two things - data and opinion. We’ve looked at a bunch of data, you know - crime, poverty, the quality of schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion - that’s right - you New Yorkers have a lot to say about which places in your city are great and which are not so great. Let’s get started.

Hey Nick, the problem with this list is that these towns are unaffordable for most Americans. Next time, could you do a top 10 list of best places to live in Upstate New York ?

Title should be "The 10 BEST Places in NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK You Should Move To"

The problem I have with this list is that I have lived on long island my whole life where 95 percent of this list is. Alot of these towns are highly highly congested and the traffic is horrible. Property is tiny and property taxes and prices of homes are very overpriced for what you get. There are a lot of homes on eastern long island or upstate that would have been better choices as far as income and space.

I've been living in Nassau County for over 30 years. You forgot to mention one little thing....the real estate taxes are astronomical, some of the highest in the country!

Paid 75k for a house on the shore of Lake Ontario in Niagara County. Put 45k into complete renovation. The following year my tax bill was 18.6k. Went to the assessor's office (we went to high school together), she showed me the complete breakdown, line item by item of the reason it was so much. I left her office and went straight to the realtor's office and listed it for sale. She stopped in on her way home from work when she saw the for-sale sign in the yard. Moved to Nevada.

I'd rather live in Adirondack Park, Saranac Lake or Lake Placid. Of Course if you want a job you'll have to work online. The most beautiful area in the country...in my opinion. Being retired my needs are different than others would be.

Nick- Can you break down NY more other than Long Island and NYC. ? What about upstate? A-daks? and southern tier ? western and central N.Y. towns and cities? Specifically? Love your channel!

It’s a shame. When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s the majority of Nassau county was mostly solid working class which meant it was affordable for mere mortals. Obviously this is no longer the case.

With the exception of a few places, most of Long Island is a great place to live, it’s just crazy expensive, so those 6 figure salaries don’t stretch as far as you think they would. The property taxes are the biggest issue. Figure 10K to 15K a year in property taxes on the average home. (Those million dollars homes have property taxes of 30K+) The schools are very good for the most part, and they better be, considering the property taxes. As far as young people having something to do, it’s not even an issue. If there’s not much going on in your town, it’s only a 10 minute ride to get to someplace where there is something going on.

I had a friend who lived in Fredonia. The pictures she sent were beautiful! I think most of upstate New York is beautiful.

Nassau County is a good place to live but the segregation/wealth divide is insane. Go from Garden City to Hempstead and it goes from beautiful multi-million dollar mansions to housing projects in one block. There is no buffer zone.

In my area, there are great places to live upstate. Corning, Brighton, Pittsford, Fairport, skaneatles. By buffalo, williamsville, Clarence, east Aurora, orchard park, and my village of Hamburg.

but most of the places have a property tax rate of 1.8% or higher, which means you would lose 20% of your house by living there for a decade

Just like you said at the beginning, whenever anyone hears New York, they think of the city. You just proved it.

Rensselaer county is a gem in upstate NY. Love you content Nick!

My criticism of this list is it's actually just a list of the best places to live near New York City. There are other places with a great quality of life in the state of New York.

I was expecting to see more of a variety. There's a lot more to New York than long island like the Hudson valley which is beautiful and more affordable.

I lived in Bellerose Queens for 30 years! Had the best of both worlds because city costs but right on the border of Floral Park so anytime I would leave the house, I would just drive east to Nassau which was a only a few minutes away.

Lake Placid is a beautiful village in upstate, would highly recommend if you enjoy outdoor activities, especially hiking, skiing and kayaking.

Long Island NY. Highest property taxes, and electric rates in the state. You better have one hell of a job. Did I mention traffic jams on the Long Island Expressway?? I live up-state in the mountains.
