"The entire crew of around 500 sailors were evacuated from the ship."
Sailors/crews of warships are trained to fight not just with enemy but also on-board fires, damages, mechanical and structural failures. If the entire crew was evacuated then that means the ship was seriously damaged to a point that no one should remain on board, or to put it in layman term: it's about to sink.

"We accidentally lit ourselves on fire while surrounded by water" doesn't sound much better than "the Ukrainian forces destroyed our ship."

The warship Moskva has not sunk it has simply been reclassified as a new type of submarine and is on a special underwater mission

The Kremlin really didn't have a good choice no matter which reason was made public.
1) The crew including the Captain/Officers and Seamen were ALL completely inept thus causing a massive explosion that resulted in the ships destruction/possible sinking.
2) Ukraine scored a massive blow to a superpower (supposedly) by hitting their prized ship in the Black Sea and resulted in complete abandoning of the crew/destruction and possibly sinking.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in Putin's meeting room on this one (hoo-boy!!!!)

Russia meanwhile claimes its ship has only entered into what they call special underwater operations

The interesting thing about this is that the Russians actually admit that there was an incident.

Depending on who you believe either Ukraine hit it with missiles or the incompetence (possible sabotage?) of the Russian crew caused the destruction.

Whichever story proves to be true it doesn't reflect well on Putin's military.

You don't evacuate the entire crew unless ship was catastrophically damaged. When a cruise ship loses their engines, do they evacuate the entire cruise ship? Or do they just tow the ship to a port? And this is a important military vessel.

I'd pay to see Putin's face the moment he was told it sank. Fantastic.

Lol Russians are so petty 🤣
Putin: "we did not loose the war, my dog ate my army"

On one had if it was an accident, it shows poor design, maintenance, training, and leadership. The Moskva was sailing in a storm and not in active firing mode, so there was a very slim chance for a fire to start in a weapon magazine. On the other hand, if the Ukrainian Neptune cruise missile, which was developed by Ukraine, struck the Moskva during a storm and the Moskva was unable to detect or defend it’s self, it shows badly on the Russian navy. If the Russian missile cruiser Moskva sinks by either an accidental fire in the ship’s magazine or by a hit by Ukraine’s Neptune cruise missile, which was developed by Ukraine, it’s a devastating blow to Russia.

With this loss and that sub that Sean Connery stole, Russia's about all out of ships.

Hopefully, they won’t have any parts to fix it.

lol I think it is worse to say that your own solders or so poorly trained and inept that they had accidently destroyed/badly damaged their own ship rather than say the enemy attacked it

According to a latest issue russian press "Komsomolska Pravda", this ship was a peaceful research vessel which was observing a spring migration of sea horse. Suddenly it had been hit by two missiles but kept calm. :)

The funny thing is that russia do thinks they could Invades japan next and take kuril island. Do they realized that how much warship and their plane will be destroyed by japanese self defense force if they did?. Lol 😂😂🤣🤣
