MotoMan heads to New York for the premiere of the all-new 2023 Nissan Z! Once there, he sits down with old friend and Chief of Nissan Design, Alfonso Albaisa to discuss the details of the 2023 Nissan Z we didn’t know when we first saw the Nissan Z Proto last year, as well discuss two of the most important aspects of the 2023 Nissan Z: Pricing and will T Tops finally make a return? Belt in, because Brother Alfonso is surprisingly direct with his answers on both fronts.

Excellent looking Z. Never thought I'd actually want to buy a brand new car.

Omg Alfonso I can’t believe you know the presenter well and are being interviewed here. I just wanted to say one thing to you. On the night the new Z was presented, I like many did not get the rectangular front grill and after sleeping on it that night (Australia) I woke up the next day and remember the car that may have inspired this design. There was this build called the ‘spirit Z’ a white flared 240z. It was an amazing race 240z. I am so happy that you and your team managed to incorporate this feature into the new Z. This car oozes tradition and vintage beyond what anyone could have imagined. Thank you.

This car brings emotion to me. I've always been a Nissan Z fanatic since the 80s 90s and 2000s although I've never been an owner of any because they have been out of reach to me. I hope that this model year I finally reach this dream car. The design is spot on with this car.

Thank you for introducing us to the Chief of Design! I look forward to the in-depth interview of this gentleman. As a former 300ZX owner, i look forward to the new Z.

Out of all the Z reviews Motor Man is by far the best : clear and to the point : Alfonso after seeing the reveal I must tell ya you demonstrated and executed a design that will be as iconic as the 240 . Why isn't the lower side of the dash to the left of the steering wheel fitted with leather / stitching ?

Growing up as a child I fondly remember sitting between the back seats in my father’s 240Z, 280Z and 300Z, while my sister rode up front. The Z started my passion for cars, and after owning many great sports cars over the years which have become more and more expensive the new Z has got me excited again. This ticks all the boxes for a great drivers car that will be sure to be a future classic.
Thank you Nissan and Alfonso for having the vision and passion to deliver to market the new Z. My local dealer has five allocated and I’m in line for one of them.

Although I'm bummed about no T-tops, I can respect not doing it from an engineering perspective. As a former Z31 and Z32 owner, I am in love with this car. I am ok with the recycling of parts bin stuff to keep cost down. If I can have this car with 400hp, manual and an LSD for 45k I will definitely be buying one. I am hoping they can reign in their dealers on markups. If the price is 45k I think they will sell a ton of these.

It's amazing Nissan knocked this out of the park during the pandemic. It's good to finally see a Z that is desirable again. It's been a long time.

I would have preferred a modernized Z32 rather then a retro design, but I'd take this over its competitors.

It's hilarious they did a mock-up of this in "black gold". That would be something to see.

Love the car and the fact that they kept it 100% Nissan. The interview was very fun to watch and appreciate the fact that Alfonso didn't shy away from any questions and was sincere with his answers. 👍👍👍

Wow! Unexpected, but awesome interview! I think it's awesome that Alfonso took into consideration the heritage and input from fans. I think he really nailed the rear, roof line, and hood, and I think people appreciate it's kind of an homage to almost every single Z in history with elements taken from each generation. I also want to compliment the unique transition of the A pillar base to the hood. These days with how bumpers are cut, black or carbon hoods can look awkward, but he did a really good job in making the lines clean for the hood, especially the possibility of a continuous unbroken two tone from the hood to the roof.

My only gripe is the line from the outer end of the headlight to the top corners of the grille. It is line flow, but I think it's awkward how a rounded line curves upward and abruptly ends on a rectangular angular grille. Doesn't look coherent to me.

I do get what was attempted with the headlight area being an homage to the original 240Z, but I think with the line coming from the hood being pretty straight and the line coming from the outer headlight being very round, when it joins the hood line, it doesn't look matched. I like the hood line, so I think the better direction would be to decrease the roundness and upward angle into the grille corners.

A possible solution includes decreasing the roundness and angle of the upward curving line. I would personally like for the line to fade into the grille, not go upwards at all, or even be eliminated, but with the homage aspect, I can see that not being a choice. So the best solution for this line might be to greatly reduce the roundness and angle, and raise the line so that the curvature matches the line from the hood while still retaining the general homage shape to the 240Z headlights.

That was a lot of words for just one line haha. Despite my lengthy ramble, I think it's an excellent design overall!!

Thanks MotoMan and Alfonso for this interview!! Can't wait to see it in person!!

T-tops for the win! One of the many reasons I keep my 6-speed ‘02 Trans Am WS6. Long tubes and an intake equates to 400 hp AND torque, simple subframe connectors plus a strut tower brace and no rigidity issues means I envy no new sporty coupes.
