Commander Sleepers: Ice Age

Lately I've been trying to sort and catalog all of my old cards, and along the way I keep running into things that seem like they could be sweet in Commander, so I decided to make a series showing off some of my favorites on a set-by-set basis. Today we're looking at some of my favorite sleepers from Ice Age. According to EHDRec, all of these cars show up in one percent or less of Commander decks, which means there's a decent chance that you've never even seen them on a Commander table, but for various reasons they might have more potential then they are given credit for. As such, here are my five Commander Sleepers from Ice Age!

Do you have some ideas for where they cards could fit in Commander? Do you have another favorite, underplayed Ice Age card for Commander? Let us know in the comments!

"Hey, we need to get rid of that Nev disk. If I cast forgotten lore, will you put nature's claim back in my hand?"
"How much green mana do you have open?"
"... seven."
"Then I will choose six other targets first."

Still a good card probably, I just picture this happening a lot.

If Forgotten Lore seems interesting to you, keep in mind there's also a black colorshifted version of it from planar chaos. Shrouded Lore.

Great idea for a series!
As someone who is also sorting through a large collection I love finding sleepers like these!

Why would Richard want another commander video series on the site? That's wierd.

"First up is earthlink..."

Oh. I see.

Absolutely a great idea. Would love to see more of these.

Great idea for a series! There's so many staple cards that the format can seem too homogenized, but these are exactly the kind of cards that make Commander special. I recently built a winter holiday themed Grumgully deck and included Glacial Crevasses as a card to represent The Grinch!

"Ice Age Standard" Against The Odds: Scaled Wurm (preferably with cards like Necropotence banned). That hypothetically would have been interesting.

Hecatomb - This is essentially Koth's ultimate, but it's been stapled to a Black enchantment and it cares about Swamps. There's a heavy deckbuilding restriction, so be sure to include it alongside a black tokens deck, like Endrek Sahr.

Jeweled Amulet - probably known to a lot of cEDH players or anyone who like Ad Nauseum / Aetherflux Reservoir. It's a sort of "fixed" Sol Ring that costs 0 when you need it to be cheap or 1 when you need it to ramp you for a turn.

Márton Stromgald - insane in any sort of tokens decks, essentially being a sort of red Beastmaster's Ascension.

Minion of Leshrac - pretty neat in something like Mairsil, or decks including Necrotic Ooze, where you can abuse his tap ability without worrying too much about the drawback.

Cool list, thanks for sharing as I can see how these cards could do some work in the right decks.

Our boy Seth here is trying to drive up demand for his bulk rares so he can finally sell off his collection. Well played sir, well played.

Scaled Wurm remains one of my favorite arts in the game :)

What a great idea for a series! Always awesome how you guys keep finding new ways for awesome content.

Speaking of which- when are we going to see another commander play inspired by a random card picked from Gatherer?? Loved that and wish it was its own series!

This series is exactly what I needed in my life.

I use Cravases in my grenzo group-fight deck. Works very well, because opponents who are forced to attack often don't want to waste it on a fog

Now I really want to see a commander version of dagger burn with Earthlink, where you give your opponents creatures, kill those creatures, and force them to sack lands.

Hey Seth, did you know that Forgotten Lore actually has another version that exists? in Planar Chaos, there's a color-shifted version called Shrouded Lore that's the same card but in black. I've actually played Shrouded Lore, it's honestly pretty alright. Forgotten Lore is probably not as good since Green has other good ways to get things back, but the base card is still solid.

Nice theme, I like it.
I think someone already might have mentioned this: Burning sands is like Earthlink, but better (if you play creatureless deck) - you don't have to worry about the upkeep cost.

I'm thinking Mesmeric Trance would pair EXTREMELY well with Bag of Holding from m20. Truly, I feel like Bag of Holding is super slept on, and this card just gave that one more utility! Thanks, Seth :)
