Install Fence Post in Concrete

How I set wood fence post in perfect alignment to create a strong and straight fence. I first ran a string line, then dug a deep hole, set and plumbed the post in the hole, and filled the hole with concrete.

Note these are pressure treated wood 4x4's intended for inground use.

Neat how a simple string does the trick for fence post alignment.

Ive watched a lot of guys setting posts on youtube and you sir are one of the few who ive seen mix the concrete and pour, also bringing the concrete a bit above ground level. Good job excellent work.

Use quick setting and you pour concrete in dry. Have done it for 30 years. Water on top, moisture from ground will set the concrete.

We used to put 4 inches of gravel in each hole then dipped the ends in a bucket of used oil. Posts lasted about 16 years. (Kansas). Later with used square down spouts and filled them we it’s very wet sand mixed with cement.my posts are about 21 years and doing fine

Did you add a gravel base? Or is the post just sitting on dirt?

I guess I'm just old school. I first coated my treated timbers with roofing tar, let it dry, then put it in the hole. Dumped in a shovel of gravel first. Braced them & then mixed concrete & dumped it in the hole. Brought it 3" or so above grade, sloped it down to maybe 2". Having soil against wood will make it absorb moisture. 🙏💓

i spike in about 1/2 way galvanized hand nails into the post at the bottom. It makes a great connection to the concrete.

You don't want your concrete level at the top. A slight dome, or curvature, will ensure water runs off and will delay your 4x4 rotting.

You can just dump your concrete in there and pack it down dry and Pour a gallon of water on top of it will set up by itself, have done this for years 😊

Yep that's a solid fence post... I'm treated too.... And it's going to rot and then your fence will fall over.

All good except for Dirt VS Concrete. Concrete holds water and will cause the post to rot faster at the bottom. Dirt however, will be better if done this way. Make mud in the hole around the post, treat it like you would the concrete and level it to the ground level. (just below the grass) Water dissipate faster keeping the post rotting fast and (most important) the post is much easier to replace when needed. As a Florida home owner I can tell you this; to replace a concrete post hole WILL break 1 of 2 things; Your back or your wallet. :-)

I am seeing metal pipes being used for fence posts these days. I am in Oklahoma, so these privacy fences get blown over, the pipe is stronger.

You can fill the holes with DRY concrete mix while adding a trickle of water into the hole. It will harden nicely, eliminating the need to pre-mix the concrete.
