Engine oil was over filled causing the engine to continuously run on when turned off.
Lucky it didn't blow up.

Saw a brand new Volkswagen detonate because the apprentice over filled it by 1 litre, he said he checked the dipstick and it had no oil on it, a lot of people including mechanics don't know to pump the dipstick as it can get an airlock in the tube, this helps to bring the oil to the correct level so you don't over fill it.

I just come across this post. My experience just had purchased another van and they had overfilled by 4 litres which a mobile tech used a dipstick pump to remove today. It did the same and rev like. And occured twice with within hours both times was able to turn off by key. Its started up fine after. Its booked in for getting it checked out and intake cleaning done am hoping it isn't turbo. Took it for a short trip after removing oil was very smoking when upto temperature. Stranger is i was able to drive it over filled for 1k mile's it was difficult to tell on dipstick if too much oil. He should of looked at the dipstick first, and topped it up a bit at a time, while keeping an eye on the dipstick.

I had the same exact thing happen to my Hilux but it did make a bang now it’s sitting in my garage for the last 6months I managed to take the rocket cover off and have a look while turning the motor by hand everything seems to be holding pressure and looking good on the top end but at the time it happen after having it towed home I tried to start it again wouldn’t start correctly continues to shutter and has a knocking sound any ideas ?? Was thinking of taking the head off and looking further into it I also bought new head gasket in case I blew the old one knocking seems to be coming from bottom end but haven’t started it since it all happen happy to strip it down and have a good look any helpful information would be great thank you

If it’s in a hydraulic lock does that necessarily mean it needs a whole new engine??? Cheers

i was expecting the intercooler to be an additional oil reserviour, lucky no hydraulic lock. mate did that with an old xf ute it had no dipstick and dipstick tube was in a very bad location, it had a cortina sump, so he put a little oil in it every now and then just in case, one day he calls me to look at his ford at first i thought it was a big end or something but no just overfull by 6 litres. the best ive seen is full to the very top by a woman thinking the engine had to be full to the filler cap, there goes the seals oil everywhere, good rust inhibitor though.

the same thing just happened to me! I put too much oil in my Citeron Burlingo 2007 diesel car, and I thought the engine was going to explode. I turned off the keys and the engine was still running and revvying, and oil and smoke was spiting out of the exhaust. It was so scary! I hope the engine survived as I will try to start it tomorrow. Any recommendations?

It still runs but it creates damage to the engine....running out of oil is just same with overfilling..
