imo: The bigger the animal the more oxygen it required to survive and oxygen levels in, on, and around the planet have been decreasing over the years and a significant decrease has occured over the past million(s) of years. Bigger animals were unable to survive without the oxygen it took for them to do so and so they slowly died off.
