Should You Paint Before Or After Your Flooring Project?

I estimate that 50% of the paint projects
I bid on the client has plans to also replace their flooring.

Thank you! This is a question we had. I was FOR SURE going to paint first. I have had 4 bids on my paint job. Only ONE contractor told me I should put the flooring in first. Interesting! And yes, I'm going to have my flooring put in first!

If it’s just painting, I think you’re right. But if you have extensive drywall repairs, skimming, sanding, etc. to do before paint, then I absolutely think all of that and at LEAST the primer should be applied BEFORE the flooring. All of that dust will get accumulate, even if you cover your floors and makes an absolute mess, and can have irreparable consequences if you’ve done the flooring first.

Flooring before painting. This allows you to properly install and caulk the baseboards. Using the paint first logic so you don't spill paint on the floor is silly. By that logic you would have to remove your flooring before painting whenever you wanted to freshen up your house with a paint job.

I want to paint the walls, install the flooring, then paint the baseboards! I would rather touch up the paint then worry/spill paint on the new floors!

I would paint before flooring. In order to installing flooring u need to take off the baseboards. I would remove carpet before painting to avoid the dust getting on walls. But I don’t see how installing flooring would damage walls unless ur careless

So, I am refinishing hardwood floors and also painting the same room. I guess the only worry if painting after the flooring is paint spills hitting the floor, but if I cover the flooring with painters canvas, it shouldn't be a problem...I hope

I’m doing a diy remodel and read that painting can cause high humidity and ruin the floors. Have you ever experienced this before?

What if I don’t have the baseboard yet? Can I paint, rip up old carpet, ( already cut around edges because drywall was applied) lay flooring then paint/install baseboard?

Can you tell us that should we do pramer or putty before flooring and rest paint after flooring?

And I think you take the baseboards off, do the wall repairs, prime and paint. Put in the carpet, THEN paint and install new baseboards. Guess what? NOT ONE DROP OF PAINT ON THE CARPET. Not one. (and I'll have your ass if you bugger my paint while installing my flooring!)
