I think you have been duped by camera manufacturers. They will slap macro on a lens that have a closer minimum focal distance. But that's not what a real macro lens is. A real macro lens gives you a 1:1 ratio or greater on the sensor. In other words it gives you true representation of size on the sensor. There are some that will give you up to 5x the magnification to get extremely close in.

That is not what a macro lens is. A macro lens is a lens that has the capacity to project and image on the sensor on 1:1 ratio.

That is absolute rubbish. A macro lens or a true macro lens doesn't necessarily mean close focus distance. It means that they provide 1:1 magnification. Meaning the ratio of the subject size that is projected to the sensor is the same (can also be greater with higher magnification ratio) as the actual real life size. So a subject photographed on a macro lens from a distance of half a meter would appeart larger than if you were to photograph the same subject from the same distance using a "normal" non macro lens which could have a ratio of 1:4 meaning the object would be projected 4 times smaller on the sensor than what it would look like irl. 1:1 Magnification ratio usually allows you to get closer to the subject (thus having a shorter minimum focus distance). Its this ratio that makes the macro lens. You could have a lens with shorter focus distance than a macro one but that still wouldn't make it a macro lens.

Doesn’t it also have something to do with how big it is on the sensor or some ratio. I’ve heard something in the last about it needing to be a 1:1 ratio to be a true macro lens. I could be totally wrong.

Nope.... Macro Lenses have nothing to do with mimimum focus distance.... that's just a side effect of what makes it a macro lens.... a Macro lens (atleast a true macro lens) allows atleast a 1:1 reproduction.... meaning something takes up as much space in the real world as it does on the sensor.... a 1cm leave will take up 1cm on the sensor
