Why Do BRAND NEW Machines Get Traded In?

I bought a new BX23S a few years ago from a local dealer and tried to trade it in almost immediately, way too little tractor for what I needed but the salesman was a good salesman. Had nothing but problems with it and wanted to trade it in with under 10 hours on it. I couldn't do it because they were gonna keep about 6 grand for 10 hours of figuring out where the next leak was gonna start and wondering why the backhoe wouldn't scratch the dirt. Even now, two years later with 100 hours primarily as a lawn mower, the third function valve doesn't work and it'll refuse to start every now and then.

Your videos were the reason I bought Kubota, but that dealer is why I never will again.

I probably fit into 3+ of these categories.. new owner, retired, tractor therapy.. possibly dropping dead in the next few years. my wife should be contacting you in a few years...

I wish my local dealer would have spent time and questioned me about my needs. I bought a bx2380 and love it for its size but its deffinatly not what i needed and its not near the machine that the old b 2150 i had. The cut quality is not even comparable to a zd 1211. I am so glad u r putting this video out and i hope other dealers see this and take note.

My L3200 gear drive was purchased new in 2012, it is a perfect fit but I only put about 30hrs a year on it. I have to have a tractor on hand for chores but my use is limited. I recently added a B2301 loader tractor so I have more capability. I don't expect the annual use to change much but when chores are waiting I need the correct equipment on hand. They will easily last for the future ownership of my rural property. And make having a rural acreage really possible. I did research the size and type of equipment that would be best suited for my land.

Hi Neil, we lucked out on our New Holland Boomer 45, with a cab/AC & radio, which had 18hrs on it... Turns out the prior owner bought it then found out it was too small for his usage... Had my thoughts when i saw the 18hrs, but the dealer transferred all of the warranty and off we went... It is working great and meets all of our needs...God Bless...Stay Safe...Chief..{NYS/ADK}

The discussion about liens is really important. Tractors are nothing like cars, where it is far easier to understand if there is a lien against the vehicle (tractors have no title or registration). It's something to more cautious over - especially if buying private party.

Excellent coverage of a very popular yet rarely discussed topic!

i love the bloopers at the end as it makes it show how hard this is to do well, which Neil does.

It's been my experience through many years that the best salesmen/women actually help the customer buy the best, most suitable, equipment for their needs. In my own business my customers were sometimes surprised when I showed them a less expensive way to get what they needed.

I worked at an RV dealership in college. We sold the same RV 3 times one summer because it was too small for each buyer....always talk to the salesman about your needs before buying

Another issue with used equipment and higher financing cost is... Warranty! How much of it is left, if any? 🤔

Great vid👍my father had buyers regret because he brought to big of a tractor but show him time save in travelling but biggest plus was the front end loader as it lift two bales instead of one. I reckon save on hours, it’s 4 cylinder in big 6 chassis n good hydraulic flow.

Nice video. The most common around me is someone older bought it to play with as there therapy toy and trade it every so often for something different.

How do you find out if a piece of equipment has a lien on it? Excellent vid / topic.

Great and appropriate review, Neil! I shopped for over a year before I bought. I knew my needs very specifically down to the height of my grass. My dealer was also tuned in to my needs like a great heart surgeon.

I have 20 acres and have a M7040. If I could do it again, I'd get the biggest tractor I could afford at that time. A few neighbors have newer tractors with all the def, scr, dpf, and alot of headaches too. 1 guy is a JD, other is a kubota like me, other guy has a MF, the newer tractors of any brand seem to have emmission problems. Makes me scared to buy a new 100 plus hp that I can really use.

I’ve told many many of my friends exactly what you said at the end about financing. In my opinion machines like these are a cash buyers market because like you said when you have to finance, the cost difference is little to none, if not overall more cost for used unit. That’s why I got my L3200 in 2012, local dealer had a L4xxx can’t remember exactly. Initially the used was cheaper, but after I added up the financing, I would have spent approximately $4k more for a used machine. No regrets to this day. It ultimately comes down to being a smart consumer and looking at things from all angles.

My brother travels quite a distance to buy used with low hours... and he doesn't put more than a few hundred hours a year on the stuff he buys, mostly because "digging dirt" is not his primary business as a landscaper. OTOH, renting or leasing works out to be more money annually than buying right and turning it over again in a few more years. When he gets done with it in 5 years the unit was cared for like he owned it (because he did) and looks mint so he will get a good buck. In the meanwhile, the unit is at the job on HIS schedule and if it needs to sit there for a few days he's not paying rent while waiting for some inspector or supplies to show up. Owning at the right price has advantages!! Examples of where his stuff was previously used might be a horse breeder who basically used it for cleaning up after mucking stalls, or grading a riding rink weekly. Another use he came across was a guy who bought a machine to build his own house, along with the finished landscape. Never left the property and only did a few full weeks of work on the foundation over 2 years time.

I have 230 hrs on a 2019 1725 Massey. I knew exactly what I needed. I have vids you can watch. All of these tractors could do what mine have I think. Keeping them properly is important.
