THE HISTORY OF SAMURAI GRAPPLING 🥋 Ground Fighting For Self Defense: Jujutsu Training

In this video, I explain the history of samurai grappling (jujutsu) and ground fighting (kumi uchi) as well as share some of the video footage that came from the 2020 Tenjin-ryu Jujutsu Seminar that was held at the Budo Ryu Kai Hombu Dojo in Kansas City, Ks.
.
Jujutsu (Japanese: 柔術 jūjutsu) also known as Jujitsu or Jiu-Jitsu, is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents.
.
The term jūjutsu was not coined until the 17th century, after which time it became a blanket term for a wide variety of grappling-related disciplines and techniques. Prior to that time, these skills had names such as "short sword grappling" (小具足腰之廻, kogusoku koshi no mawari), "grappling" (組討 or 組打, kumiuchi), "body art" (体術, taijutsu), "softness" (柔 or 和, yawara), "art of harmony" (和術, wajutsu, yawarajutsu), "catching hand" (捕手, torite), and even the "way of softness" (柔道, jūdō) (as early as 1724, almost two centuries before Kanō Jigorō founded the modern art of Kodokan judo).
.
This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Kano also brought in the live sparring aspects as well.... I also believe the Gracie wanted use the word jiu jitsu to separate themselves from judo also maedia used the term jiu jitsu while teaching the gracies.. theirs a real good book called opening the closed guard by Robert Drysdale.. it breaks down how all that played out true historical facts.. its a great book during the time of massive change. For the martial arts community... great break down anshu...

My first art was traditional Japanese Jiujitsu back in the 1970's. Now everyone thinks that BJJ is the same thing. Not even close. Everything we learned was killing or crippling. Mostly stand up grappling, some ground work, strikes, kicks and traditional weapons.

BJJ is basically Kosen Judo. Even Japanese Jujitsu had ground masters like Matameon Tanabe was taking guys to the ground and breaking their legs.

hi christa. it's a really cool channel you got there. i am a bjj and former judo practitioner from Israel and recently i have been dedicating a few hours a week on battojutsu and basic katana strikes - so let me tell you I am pretty stoked to find experts, still keeping alive the older art of Japanese Jujutsu as it was in the old samurai days (I'm kind of a samurai nerd). now speaking as a mere humble bjj blue belt (I don't pretend to speak from a place of authority) your submissions are quite good and professional and it's cool that you teach them as counters to strikes. the problem i have with that however is that you don't show these drills on a fully resisting opponent. those techniques could be really cool if they would actually work against a boxer who throws fast jabs-cross combos you know what i mean? but all I see is you demonstrating it all as theory. I'm not doubting your abilities or anything but I wonder if you train your students to pull all of these aikido moves and submissions (and transitions) under pressure, against opponent's defensive moves.

It’s cool because MMA Fans watching this will recognize those last couple of techniques and be like, oh that’s actually traditional. Haha Love the Tenchu music!

Great informative video. Only downside to that cross collar choke when you’re in someone’s guard, is you’re giving up your arms or putting them in a bad position when you’re leaning forward for them to sub you. It’s better to cross collar if you’re on bottom like your opponent was. But that’s only if you’re fighting against someone that knows what they’re doing. The average Joe in the street, sure they’re f*cked. I really enjoy your videos! Wish there were more Ninjutsu dojo’s in my area! (Katy, TX)
