In my art school, we were taught to practice with expensive materials because you can tighten up and become "precious" when only reserving expensive materials for special occasions. Expensive materials are important to use for archival purposes, they won't deteriorate as quickly and are more colour-fast (won't fade in light). There is value in practicing with cheap stuff but we need to be wary of a sort of reverse-snobbery and prejudice toward expensive materials.

Things like soy sauce and coffee are fine to paint with, but I'd be worried about how they degrade over time on the paper.

This is why I digital paint, I can learn ALL of the art concepts without the heavy price...Then move to physical media.

Ikr, but great tool is also necessary to get better quality I will say it's boost ur skill by 10 percent make it look better, but if ur skill only 10% add expensive tools it becomes 20 % but if ur skill already 50% even if ur not having the best tools ur are still better than the 20% that's how I kinda see it

AMAZING!!! Is practice a viable substitute for natural talent? No!!! I've been practicing & taking classes for 20 years and I still suck! First timer walked into class and BOOM... perfection! I wanted to tear her hands off. Instead, I told her how great she was and left to find a new hobby 😢
