Clermont Queensland is located approximately 990 kilometres North-West of Brisbane and 274 km South-West of Mackay in the Isaac Region.

Clermont was founded after the discovery of gold in 1861, by a local shepherd and his station hands at Nelson's Gully, not far from where the township stands today.

Word soon spread of the discovery, and within twelve months,
the site had become a significant gold prospecting area.

By 1863, there were up to one thousand prospectors searching for gold in the area.

The township developed around a lagoon near the site of the initial gold find, which became known as the Diggings Lagoon, and later as Hood's Lagoon. The location was officially proclaimed as Clermont on the 25th March 1864.

Today there is only a smelter chimney and old shop remnants of Copperfield still standing.

Although the area is a significant gold and copper producer,
silver and coal miners have also become successful in the region.

And today, all mining enterprises account for 40% of local employment.

If you are travelling to the Clermont region, be sure to 'mark an X' on your map for a prospecting adventure.
