You'll be seeing more and more high tech farms popping up in cities.

As the population grows, and we run out of farming land, along with climate change, the future of farming is to bring them into our cities. Creating high tech vertical farms that use aeroponics or hydroponics.

From an underground farm in London, to a Japanese office building with a rice paddy field. Across the world people and companies are investing in creating new ways and technology to provide a more sustainable future.

Big name investors include Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Leonardo DiCaprio, and even the former McDonalds CEO Don Thompson. All pushing the technology of farming and agriculture forward.

Companies highlighted in this video include: AeroFarms, Growing Underground, Square Roots (who have Kimbal Musk, brother of Elon Musk, as a co-founder), the Open Agriculture Initiative, Persona Group, Farm One, Bowery, Plenty, Impossible Foods, and Beyond Meat.

I have been in artificial farm in Lithuania six years ago. In winter. Around -15°C that day, in farm was around +20°C. It was aquaponic farm (where fishes are grown in the water tanks and that water is supplied for plants. That way you grow fish and plants at the same time) and the farm itself was on top of the building, like a greenhouse. Amazing experience to see plants growing in the middle of the winter. Trully this is sustainable future every city must have.

This farm looks like my old Minecraft sugar cane skyscraper farms, good to see Minecraft's logic working in real life.

So it is more efficient, can be grown year round, and better for the environment. We should do this everywhere. Make cheap healthy organic food plenty for everyone. Save the world.

It’s a really nice idea and I am sure it would solve many issues. What I’m worried about now is, when you cultivate in an open area only certain crops can be cultivated in a particular season. It is exactly those crops that are needed by the people to survive that phase of the year. Say for instance you get watery fruits like melons in summer and starchy veggies like pumpkin in winter. This tech enables us to cultivate whatever we want whenever we want sooner or later. This flexibility is both a boon and a curse. It might mess up the type of food that we need to eat during particular season. We just need to be cautious on that regard.

While this is not practical for the masses at the moment (as MANY are saying), this does prove that we can indeed grow more in less space, it is indeed more space efficient, and while most crops like corn and wheat cant be grown in this fashion, the idea that we can create these simulated environments shows that we are not so doomed to starvation as world population grows. We cannot grow everything, YET! Eventually, like we did for greens, we will figure out how to do it more efficiently.
