Why did Japan surrender?

Ending a global war is complicated. While the US pushed Japan to the brink of surrender, it may have been the USSR entry that forced them to accept Allied terms

Everything is more complicated than it appears at first. To find that out just get married!

It's not just that the Soviet Union entered the war. It had been agreed at the Yalta conference that the Soviet Union was to declare war on Japan within 3 months of Germany's capitulation. When the Soviet Union denounced the non-aggression pact between them and Japan, Japan knew what was coming. But, the Soviet Union didn't just declare war. They took out the Japanese Manchurian army in just days, capturing a huge area that had previously been occupied by the Japanese which was the heart of their industrial production. Japan never had much in terms of natural resources of their own and not much of its own industry, so they relied heavily on mainland industry to keep the war going. Losing that industrial base was the killing blow.

Thank you for posting.
I have known this for years.
Far too many people do not know about the destruction of other cities.

Well, the Red Army really stuck it to the Kwantoon army and made them retreat, so Imperial Japans days were really numbered.

The Japanese navy didn’t even care. Literally went and said that’s cool. Do it again 10 times

The surrender of Japan is very VERY complicated. I love learning about military history, but to me, there were multiple factors in their surrender. Atom bomb, Soviet invasion, political infighting like the coup against the pro-peace. But there were still other Japanese forces that refused to accept surrender or didn't know and refused to believe it. Like I said, very complicated.

Also, the Japanese would’ve understood that surrender terms from the Americans would be much better than surrender terms from the Soviets.

During the Battle of Khalkhin Gol (1939), japanese forces learnt they had no businesses fighting the soviets because they got beat up really bad.

Don’t forget the formerly neutral USSR was also the only mediator of negotiations between Japan and the US.

Makes alot of sense .
Imagine Japan being subjected to subjugation half as sadistic as their own horrific subjugation of its Asian neighbours .

When the emperor of Japan read aloud his surrender over the radio he said "our enemy now possess a weapon so powerful it could not only destroy whole cities but also the whole of humanity" this is the best I could do with a few translations but definitely it was the nukes

The Japanese couldn’t have known that surrendering unconditionally would be the best economic decision ever

My grandad was sent to be a part of the Japanese invasion when the bombs were dropped. Probably saved his life.

Often completely forgotten is that China was able to connect with allied forces and was actually pushing back Japanese forces in the south at that point too. With the soviets pushing from the north and American preparing a landing + the nukes.
