We are going to be installing proxmox one of the very best virtualization solutions using a type 1 hypervisor. You can use proxmox to host Windows and Linux machines. Easily manage them and remote connect into them.

Local LVM does not need to be removed and should be used to install VM’s and Containers. A VM in an LVM storage will perform faster and allows for features like snapshots without using qcow2, and merging physical volumes for volume groups.

The only reason I see it should be done is if there are extreme storage limits.

Every time I see people saying "use Etcher" I'm just thinking "why not Ventoy?" I remember using Etcher and it was really annoying to restore my USB flashdrive back into a normal flashdrive and/or repeat everything every time time I want to try a new distro.

I outright just prefer Rufus on Windows, and that one comes with the ability to restore the flashdrive easily, but Ventoy just meant you don't need to re-format anything. Just plop down an .iso together with your normal files. Easy.

Promox is dope! I've been using it for awhile now to test out virtual machines and containers.

True story, I had a friend who needed Windows for ArcGIS. I built her a Linux Mint system and set up Windows in VMWare Player. She never had problems after that. But I clearly see the advantage of your method.

You still write ISO's to USB?
Get Ventoy and just copy the ISO to USB. Then select the ISO you want from the Ventoy menu when booting.
So nice.

1) KVM is not a type 2 hypervisor, its basically type 1. Regardless, good topic.
2) Do NOT believe that you can run a windows 10 vm in an old laptop with 4GB RAM.

I run a Proxmox cluster at home and it works very well. You get some of the fancier features for free/cheap that would cost thousands of dollars if you went the VMware route.

Virt-manager(Qemu/KVM) is not really a type 2 hypervisor tho, kvm converts linux into a type 1 hypervisor.
Proxmox is basically just a stripped down Debian install with KVM, LXC and a great webui for managing it all.

Still a good video tho.

I really like this topic, but I have some tips for your setup:
- Always use VirtIO Drivers for Network and Storage. Even tho they both need some additional setup of drivers, both of them are much more performant if you compare them to the Windows Machine Default Intel E1000
- I'd recommend you to enable balooning for every Machine. Especially for machines with low ram, this can save you much ram for other VMs / CTs. For example the host has 8GB. Machine A needs 6GB of ram (its limit) and Machine B is in idle and just needs 1GB of Ram (with a maximum of 6GB). Proxmox will give the needed Ram to Machine A, as it isn't needed at this moment.

As I need a second computer, I decided I will remove my server and let the second pc run as a server. So, it hosts a windows VM for my gf or friends that are coming over for gaming and then it hosts a ubuntu vm running that is hosting my cloud and nas for inhouse usage. It is running proxmox in its newest version and Windows 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. (GPU Passthrough, USB card and I was good to go). I now use my old server to look at new linux distors which I might like. Perfect solution for me as I stopped running two computers where only one is needed....

So I consider myself very well versed in virtualization scene but for some reason, I've never heard of this software but my gosh, it just turned an otherwise disaterous laptop breakage mistake into possibly, the most versatile and useful PC carcass in my house. This thing is a dream. Many thanks for this demo.

Isn't virtmanager just an interface to libvirt which in turn tells kvm what to do?
Basically it's a very scaled down version of proxmox.

Did not expect to see ArcGIS in one of your videos. Even though I'm a QGIS fanboy, this makes me really happy to see more GIS love :) Good luck for your certification, and have fun with GIS!

Great video 👍 Thank you.
Wondering whether you evaluated xcPNG in the alternative . . . and if so, what were your personal use reasons for going with ProxMox over xcPNG?
Kindest regards and happy holidays.

Proxmox was my first real dive into Linux. Using it on an old 4th gen i5-4670k with a OpenMediaVault VM handling storage, a mint VM for Linux stuff, and then a Windows VM for stupid microsoft stuff. Since I'm new to Linux, it's actually been quite frustrating and had to redo the whole setup a couple of times before I felt it was OK. It's now being used 24/7, but reading through the comments on this video it seems I can still do a much better job :p

Great video! Thanks for this mate. I just ordered mini PC and will do exactly the same solution with Windows10 and Linux on the Proxmox. I will finally free my laptop from the VBox and VMs and use the browser instead from any place I have Internet access.
