The thick layer might also be made with "hypertufa" (a kind of cob mixture that might include a local waste product such as sawdust, or even to make it from "foamcrete" that incorporates a waste product of Styrofoam and the Portland cement.) Such options would make it less expensive to make AND probably less heavy.
