It's hidden away … in a dark closet … alone … forgotten … until we turn on a tap and simply expect hot water to appear.

Today, we're talking about your hot water heater — the next biggest electricity user after your HVAC. So what can you do to use it less? First, wrap it in an insulation jacket … it's like a warm hug all year ‘round! Turn the temperature down 10 degrees to save $80 a year — you probably won't even notice the difference at the faucet. You can also wash your clothes in cold water, take a shorter shower (if you're into that kind of thing) or just install a low-flow showerhead. If you're feeling really ambitious, send yours to the curb and install a solar or a tankless, on-demand water heater.
