As a plumber, you forgot one very important step turn off the water before you do so, there should be a shutoff valve on the cold side of the heater also in some houses the anode rod won’t come all the way out because it will hit the ceiling it’s almost as tall as the heater so make sure you have room to pull it out before doing this if you don’t just grind it off and don’t let the other half fall in hopefully this helps!

“Don’t have to drain water heater”

Homeowners taking it out under pressure 😄

Make sure you turn the water off first👍

Don’t forget to turn the water off and drain off the pressure lol. And if you know the make-up of your water, you can get anode rods better equipped for whatever is in your water.

I just burned the shit out of myself doing this.
Hint: Turn the water off first.

Im a 7 year exp plumber and I seen a 22yr old Bradford white that was really well maintained and all we did was flush it and change thermos and elements and it's still kicking a year later

Sold my house after 19 years. Never changed the anode rod. The water heater was still working fine.

While not required to fully drain, it is recommended to drain a little.
Replace with an anode rod that has sections instead of a solid one. Use pipe grease on the threads.

When the water starts smelling like rotten eggs 🥚, time to change that rod. When the rod starts breaking down it will give off that kind of smell.

I'm afraid if I unscrew mine it will fall apart. 😱

That is very true. It’s also important what rod you use. If you have hard water use an aluminum oxide rod. The different water qualities via minerals and byproducts react to some rods better than others..

Be sure you have enough ceiling height to actually remove it and replace the new one before you start! They make segmented rods for low ceilings. How do I know this? 😖

I've only changed them about every 10yrs. I also flushed my water heater yearly because I had well water which was harsh. Usually I tried to do it more often but still.

And flush out the tank once or twice a year

Some anode rods are built onto the hot water dielectric nipple, also depending on the rod or water condition, it doesn't deteriorate instead becomes a fat stick of corrosion that is difficult to remove and leaves a lot corrosion crap in the tank
