A hidden truth is that inside many of the "I don't want a dog" opinions, there was once the pain of having to say goodbye to one.

"Mom, dad, can I have a dog?"
"No"
*2 months later*
"We bough nuggets for Spike, not you" lol

I fully believe that one of these dads has an office job and if the kids ever visit they’ll see framed pictures of the dog he “didn’t want”. No pictures of the kids. Just the dog.

Why is nobody talking about that absolute BEAST of a man who had a german shepard on his shoulder while cooking?

My oldest cat lived to be 22; I got her when I was 7 and she died when I was 28. Throughout her life my dad would quietly grump and complain about her, asking when she was gonna kick the bucket and we could stop wasting money feeding her. Every night though while he watched t.v, she would come and snuggle and rub her face on his feet and he would give her little bits of whatever he was eating.

The day she died, I caught him in his shop sobbing as he built what would become her little casket and a cross for her grave. I've never seen my dad cry like he did that day and probably never will again. He still doesn't like to talk about her as he starts to tear up.

Dad's always act tough because they think they need to, but a lot of them really are softies at heart ❤

Their Kids: Dad, I got myself a puppy.

Dads: You mean "you got me a puppy".

Hard to stay in the "don't want the dog" mode when the dog looks at you like you are the greatest thing in the world.

My dad had an extra tall bed.
I got a shih tzu that my dad didn't want... And the shih tzu could barely jump on the couch. Dad's bed was twice as high...
I'd come home hearing my dad baby talking him and when he realized I was home he'd yell "come get this D dog off my bed. Jumping up on here while I'm trying to nap!"

The last guy was just like my dad. Didn't want a dog, had lost his dog years ago. I had this tiny, weird, grossly obese dog waddle into my college building one day. (We suspect an elderly owner who's family tossed him out) After posting his pic at Wal-Mart and at all the shelters with no callers, I plotted with my mom for them to visit. He took one look at the dog and beelined to him. They were inseparable for the next 12 years.

Reminds me of a buddy of mine when we went to a party, a small dog tried getting his attention.

His first reaction was, quite verbally, "Go away dog, you're not my friend". About 10 minutes later the dog was in his lap receiving maximum petting.

I have a very stoic father who didn’t even shed many tears after losing his entire family. But when my dog buddy died even he broke. Buddy Was just the sweetest bundle of joy ever to exist.

My dad loved their 4 Maltese poodles so much that he doesn't want another dog. I think the heartache of saying goodbye when it was time, was too much.

Behind a "I don't want a dog", there is generally a furry friend who is no longer there and a gap that is very difficult to fill (So many do not want to go through the same with a new loss)

As a 16 year old boy, I completely understand these dads. I recently lost my best friend (he’s was a golden retriever) and I couldn’t stop thinking about him. The pain was too much that I couldn’t stop crying and grieving for a week (I feel a lot better now but not completely healed). Getting a dog means you have to be prepared to eventually say goodbye to your old friend. This kind of pain is something not even grown men could handle.

The life expectancy of dogs and cats is so short. Time passes so quickly. We get used to their comforting presence and one day it's the end. They die. They leave a big void. It hurts so much.

And I wished they lasted they don't, and you end up sleepless, crying over your sweet dog that has passed watching these videos. I can see the happiness and connection in the eyes.
