While I understand the sentiment of not wanting to simply make a game thats too much like whats already on the market, it's not a good idea to try to reinvent the wheel. The biggest MMO's on the market right now got to where they are by taking the best parts of their competitors and adding their own flair to it

WoW is literally the pinacle of what an MMO can be, the biggest problem of world of Warcraft is very old engine and old graphics, also the expansion system, but overall the mechanics, the gameplay and the world building is top tier up to this day, TWENTY YEAR LATER
If they dont want this patch, i fear what the are planning for the game

This is kinda devastating to me. I've been longing for a new MMO and Riot felt like my only hope left for the coming years. It's not like other genres where you'll have a good new game at least every 1-2 years. A large portion of those that have been anticipating it from the start will probably not even be able to play or enjoy it fully because by then their life will be who knows where. And then there's the possibility that what they were planning was better than what they're trying to do now.

Riot: 3 years for a model and ability update for a single champion and 20 years for a new mmo. Take it or leave it

I’m sorry but this is a bad call. Wow players have been itching to jump ship for sometime. But no other mmo has the polish and art direction like wow.

I feel like a “runeterra wow” would be revolutionary.

This is how I feel as a Metroid Fan. Metroid Prime 4 was announced in E3 2017, then development was completely overhauled in 2019, and we still haven't seen any gameplay or mention about it since then. I'm getting similar vibes with this.

Super excited now. Hearing the care and thought process of the development of the game shows that they arent just a big company trying to rush out a game for the bucks but actually allowing their creatives to put their live and passion into creating something truly special. Of course there are risks for the decision they are making, but u want your artists and devs to be able to be creative and take risks. Thats why so many indie games are so special

I feel like the excuse of not wanting to just be WoW with Runeterra paint is just a bad excuse for scrapping that much work. I'm not particularly upset about the game taking longer over all, because I've resigned to the fact that I doubt we'll ever see the project come to life. But you're meaning to tell me that the design team started working on an MMO without confronting the number 1 problem MMO's have to jump over to be good? That's what gets me.

I mean it's a fucking mmo, when you start out designing the game the first checkmark you have to cross off the list is making it fun, and the second checkmark is finding out how to separate it from WoW. Those are the two main criteria, and they have been in the MMO community long before Riot started working on this. It's not some weird secret ingredient to the recipe, it's not the weird herb combination, it's the fucking chicken.

Now they try to re-invent the wheel. Sounds great on paper but judging by what Riot has done the past decade I wouldn't hold my breath on it actually being "amazing".
Instead of trying to fuse working, well established, elements of different games together and put it into a world of Runeterra. It being similiar to WoW wouldn't be a bad thing if it plays well.
But scrapping everything, adding another 2-3 years to the whole spectacle now?
It's a bad move and I don't expect it working out so well in the end.

Honestly I do not understand why Riot is trying to create an MMO. The genre is already past it's heyday, has reached market saturation a long time ago and MMO's are possibly the most expensive games to develop and maintain of them all. And then there's also the risk that an MMO is going to split the League community in two because both MMO's and MOBA's are a huge timesink so players will have to split their time between them. There's just a way too high chance that this project is going to blow up in their face and maybe even take LoL down with it if it really goes spectularly wrong.
